In 1990 her No. 1 single convinced us that opposites attract, but too often it seems that Abdul applies the same principle to her wardrobe. The basics—lovely eyes, great smile and slammin' shape—are surely there, but at 35 the petite dancing dynamo should confine fanciness to her footwork and strut right on past the mismatched frocks that are totally out of step with her age. "She's such a great dancer and performer, her style could be so much more minimalized, athletic and young," says designer John Bartlett. Comedian Carol Leifer agrees. "She'd be great with a look that's more contemporary. She's stuck in the late '80s." Comedy Central's Craig Kilborn would give her an A for less effort. "She's definitely trying," he says. "She's just trying too hard. She takes risks and they backfire."
