MIB's Will Smith (above) joined the all-jet set for the release of the film's album in Manhattan last July (costar Tommy tee Jones, who leavens the look with a white shirt, doesn't make the cut). Antonio Banderas (top) donned Desperado duds for an L.A. do in October

Whether chasing aliens or awards, wearing black is a celebrity nobrainer. It's slimming, looks good day or night, in any setting and every season. That's why last March Al Pacino (right) went with ebony Armani at the Oscars and Brad Pitt (below) was The Devil's Own In L.A.

Actor, writer, commentator and occasional cross-dresser Howard Stern (below) went darkly formal at the Cannes Film Festival in May; Party of "Five's Scott wolf (right) cut the sitcom with a somber outfit at the Kids; Choice Awards in L.A. in April; and musician-actor Harry Connick Jr. (far right) did the Copycat thing at the West Coast Premiere of Contact in July.

Is he pulling our leg? One of black's attractions is that it covers a multitude of shins, an advantage that rapper-actor LL Cool J ignored at the MTV Music Video Awards in New York City last fall.

"I was the original man in black," claims angst-driven comedian Richard Lewis (in L.A. last winter), who started dressing darkly in the '70s, when his colorful outfits flopped onstage. "I decided to cover my body and hide," says Lewis, who insists that he even wears black underwear. "At first people thought I was spreading satanism or something." But women liked the look, and it became "a vanity thing." The only downside? "Even if you have the healthiest scalp in the world, it looks like you have dandruff." Still, Lewis wants credit for his fashion contribution. "If it weren't for me." he says, "everyone would still be dressing like Don Ho."

Although he provided much of the color in My Best Friends's Wedding, Rupert Everett (below) went funereal for the film's Manhattan premiers in June.

Sedately stepping out sans Planet Hollywood gear, Bruce Willis and G.I. Jane star Demi Moore posed as his 'n her ravens at an L.A. screening of HBO's If These Walls Could Talk last October. In June John Travolta faced off in Armani at the opening of his latest hit in L.A.

Is he wearing black underneath? Calvin Klein briefs model and Melrose Place star Antonio Sabato Jr. toned it down at the premiere of That Thing You Do! in L.A. last September.
