Less than 24 hours after a tearful Elizabeth Taylor appeared on 60 Minutes to express her "total disbelief, horror, pain" about the death of Princess Diana, she hosted a Labor Day picnic at her Bel Air home. Party-goers, who munched on baked chicken and cole slaw, included Gregory Peck, Cher, Johnny Depp, Nastassja Kinski and Roddy McDowall. A distraught Taylor had considered canceling the event but decided, according to a source, that the party might be "a way to start the healing process." This sentiment was acknowledged by Taylor's rep, who added, "It was a very somber occasion, where everyone shared their feelings."...
Quick, what does Barbra Streisand have in common with Gillian Anderson? In a word, Pensacola. That's the name of the new syndicated TV series about elite fighter pilots that costars Streisand's fiancé, James Brolin, and Anderson's boyfriend, Rodney Rowland. But the couples have yet to double-date. Anderson, who is in Vancouver shooting The X-Files, has never been to the Pensacola set in San Diego. Pity the poor reservationist at the Royalton Hotel in New York City when reps for both Chris Rock and Stevie Wonder called to reserve the hotel's one and only penthouse for the week leading up to the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 4. But no one had to flip a coin. Rock, the awards-show host, won the coveted $2,200-a-day penthouse, in the words of a source, "because MTV wanted their host to be happy." Perhaps Wonder did too. He cheerfully settled for a smaller suite on a lower floor....
Kathy Switzer, the 27-year-old daughter of Dallas Cowboys head coach Barry Switzer, is working as an animal wrangler on Possums, a comedy starring Mac Davis as a broadcaster for a lousy football team, which is now shooting in Nowata, Okla. Her wrangling duties include picking up after a movie dog that befouls Davis's lawn (the doggie deposits are fake, a rep for the film assures me), but Switzer helped in another way. Her dad accepted a small role in the movie at her suggestion but, she says, was "nervous about doing his lines. So I said, 'Just holler like you normally do, and you'll be fine.' "
