As usual the two-hour ceremony—held in the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica airport and broadcast live on CBS—lived up to its reputation as one of Hollywood's most relaxed nights out. (The Gallup organization chose winners after polling fans on their favorite stars in TV, film and music.) "People here aren't so much scrutinizing what you're wearing and who you're with," said Kathy Najimy (Veronica's Closet). "It's much more like a real party." Indeed, Oprah, outfitted in a brown Richard Tyler pantsuit, felt comfortable enough to debut a new do of ringlets ("I was trying something different for a special evening," she says), while Days of Our Lives' Krista Allen-Moritt dared to wear the most daring dress of the evening—a Band-Aid-size Hervé Léger. "The guy who does wardrobe for our show told me to wear it," she said. "I told him my husband was going to kill me!"
After cohosts Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Reba McEntire wrapped up the evening, 500 guests headed to the Beverly Hilton Hotel. They dined on roast beef and chocolate silk pies while a 16-piece orchestra played big band music. "We might cut the rug a little bit tonight," said Jon Tenney (Brooklyn South), who had a rare night out with his Dolce & Gabbanaclad wife, Teri Hatcher, while daughter Emerson Rose, 2 months, stayed home. However most celebs chose to schmooze, not swing. Some for good reason. "He's a foot taller than I am," Hart said with a giggle of her beau, actor James Fields. "We're not fully coordinated."
