Buddy, the basketball-shooting golden retriever who starred in last summer's Air Bud, died of cancer in San Diego on Feb. 10, a year after his right rear leg was amputated because of the disease. He was 10.
Aussie supermodel Elle Macpherson, 33, gave birth to her first child on Valentine's Day in New York City. The 7-pound newborn was named Arpad Busson after his father, 35, a French financier. But Arpad's parents, who are not married, plan to call him by his middle name, Flynn.
Actor Daniel Baldwin, 37, who was hospitalized after a cocaine overdose in New York City on Feb. 2, the same day filming began on his new romantic comedy It Had to Be You, was released from the project by mutual agreement with the producers last week. Baldwin is recovering at his home but faces criminal charges in May for drug possession.
M*A*S*H's Larry Linville, 58, who played Maj. Frank Burns on the TV series from 1972 to 1977, underwent surgery on Feb. 12 in New York City to remove part of a lung and will now undergo chemo and radiation treatments for cancer. Doctors recently found a tumor under the actor's breastbone....
Harry Caray, 78, the Hall of Fame broadcaster for the Chicago Cubs, collapsed after suffering a sudden change of heart rhythm on Feb. 14 in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Actor Robert Downey Jr., 32, now serving a 180-day sentence in a Los Angeles jail for using drugs in violation of his probation, sustained a cut on his nose during a fistfight with a fellow inmate on Feb. 13. Downey was treated at the prison infirmary. The cause of the altercation is being investigated.
Bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, 29, who survived severe head and chest injuries in the Paris car crash that killed Princess Diana on Aug. 31, assumed duties on the security team at Harrods in London earlier this month. The department store is owned by Mohamed Al Fayed, father of Diana's companion, Dodi Fayed, who also died in the accident (see page 58)....
The handwritten lyrics to "Candle in the Wind 1997," the ballad revised by songwriter Bernie Taupin and performed by Elton John at Diana's funeral, fetched $442,500 on Feb. 12 at an auction in Beverly Hills benefiting the Princess's charities.
