He plays a politically incorrect senator in the new comedy Bulworth, but has Warren Beatty ever considered throwing his hat in the ring? "There was a time when people said, 'Have you ever thought of getting married?' " muses Beatty, 61. "Of course you think about it. But you don't do it." But hey, wait a minute, the longtime Lothario did get hitched to actress Annette Bening in 1992, and now he's a family man with three kids (Kathlyn, 6, Ben, 3, and Isabel, 1). As for a political career, Beatty insists, don't expect such a reversal of policy. "I'd rather attract attention in some other way," he says. "I'm such a lucky person to be able to say whatever I want as a movie star. Plus, you can be a bigger show-off in film than in public office."
What about Bob?
British actress Kristin Scott Thomas, who costars with Robert Redford in the romantic drama The Horse Whisperer, admits that initially she just said nay to Nicholas Evans's bestseller. "At first, I went, 'A woman, a kid and a horse? Nope!' " says Scott Thomas, 37. "But even though it wasn't the type of book I'd buy, as soon as I heard that Robert Redford was making it into a movie, I rushed out to get it. And after I read the book, I thought I was perfect for the part." Even so, Scott Thomas, an Oscar nominee for 1996's The English Patient, suffered a serious case of jitters upon meeting Redford. "You grin a lot and go, 'I can't believe I'm meeting you,' " she says. "He's totally charming and used to dithering females. And yes, I was one of them."
Hurricane Julianna
Costarring in the big-budget comet flick Deep Impact left a sizable impression on Ron Eidard. In fact, when news broke two months ago that an asteroid may be headed toward Earth, the Men Behaving Badly alum chalked it up to a movie-studio stunt. "At first I thought, 'Wow, the publicity mill at Paramount and DreamWorks is really good! They're working all the angles!' " says Eidard, 33, who plays an astronaut in the film. So what real-life natural disaster does the actor fear most? "I think it's probably just my girlfriend [ER's Julianna Margulies] losing her temper," quips Eidard. "That's an act of nature I want to avoid. Bring on the comet—just keep her calm!"
Mixed reviews
In Spike Lee's basketball drama He Got Game, Denzel Washington notches his first love scene with a white actress, Milla Jovovich. But at an early screening of the film which Jovovich attended, the interracial pairing had some black women crying foul. It surprised me. I've never felt emotions like that about a movie love scene," says Jovovich, 22. "It definitely got to people in the audience. But we didn't do the scene to offend people. It's not about sex; it's about holding someone who understands. When Denzel asks, 'Can you be real with me?' it touched me. But a lot of women missed that dialogue because they were screaming, 'Don't go for it, Denzel!' I guess Spike just has a way of pushing people's buttons."
The marrying Kind
He'll tie the knot with Faith Prince on Spin City's May 20 season finale, and the day after he taped that episode, Richard Kind got engaged to Dana Stanley. "I was nervous for the show, but I think I will be terrified when I get married," says Kind, 41, who plays the mayor's press secretary, Paul. "I don't think it prepared me one bit. When you're doing a wedding on a show, all you need are writers, a good set design and a costumer. When you're putting on your own wedding, oh my God, you need an army." So have they set a date? "It may be on my birthday [Nov. 22], which I'm not happy about," says Kind, "because then I'll have to celebrate my birthday and my anniversary on the same day—and I won't get all the gifts I should be getting!"
