Carat Tops

Shakespeare wrote, "Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown." Clearly, he didn't know just how hip royal headgear could be. "With tiaras now topping the crops of everyone from Sharon Stone to Minnie Driver [1], dressing like a blue blood has never been bigger. "There's a little princess in every girl, and a tiara says it's wonderful to live the fantasy," says L.A. jewelry designer Cynthia Bach, whose platinum-and-diamond creations have haloed Salma Hayek [5] and Meg Ryan. Hayek, for one, is thrilled that the make-believe look is suddenly in. "When I was a little girl, they told me I couldn't wear tiaras to school," she says. "Now I get to wear whatever I want!" One word of caution, though: Tiaras may cause some wearers to behave like royal pains. Naomi Judd [2] jokes that whenever she wears a piece from her collection of 10 crowns, "I make [daughters] Wy and Ashley address me as 'Her Royal Majesty, the Sovereign Queen of Everything.' "
