Bloody hard to believe, considering that Loomer has donated more than 440 times, possibly a world record. Since 1954, the retired geography professor (known to medical workers as Bloody Harry) has contributed in 81 cities in 21 states, from Cheyenne, Wyo., to Fairfax, Va.—enough to fill a 55-gallon drum. Why? Says his sister Mary Loomer-Oliver: "Guy has a big heart."
One winter he drove 90 miles in an ice storm to deliver a precious pint in River Falls, Wis. Another time, he drained his veins while vacationing in West Virginia, riding his bike until he found the nearest blood bank. When he visits his sister in St. Paul, Minn., he often suggests they go bowling—and hit a blood bank en route. "The only time I bowled 222 back-to-back," says Loomer, "was after giving blood."
His O-positive blood type is the most common, which means, says Loomer, "I can give to almost anybody." Now that he lives near a blood bank in Las Vegas, he can more easily donate to the allowable limit. The son of a Wisconsin schoolteacher and his wife, he has no children, lives with his wife, Barbara, 64, a homemaker, and starts each day with 150 push-ups. A tireless crusader, Loomer sees red when those who could contribute, don't. "Keeping people alive appeals to me," says Loomer, who has never taken blood money. "I like to tell people, 'The life you save may be your own.' "
