The Way We Were
A Look Back at the Year People Began
The Return of Hanoi Jane
Jane Fonda, her then-husband Tom Hayden and their 9-month-old son Troi arrived in Boston on April 28 after a 24-day visit to North Vietnam. The couple told reporters the South Vietnamese government was crumbling. A year later, Saigon fell. Fonda and Hayden divorced in 1990. Fonda, 61, a two-time Academy Award winner, is married to Time Warner vice chairman Ted Turner. Hayden, 59, is a California state senator. Their son, who became an actor like his mother, will play his father in an upcoming film about '60s radical Abbie Hoffman.
Activist folk singer Joan Baez, 33, invited PEOPLE to her Palo Alto, Calif., home, where she was raising her young son and called herself an "anti-warhorse."
Actress Agnes Moorehead, who bothered and bewildered her son-in-law Darrin as Endora on TV's Bewitched, died April 30 in Minnesota at age 67.
Boys in the Hood
Sylvester Stallone, 27, and Henry Winkler, 28, made their debut May 1 as leading men in The Lords of Flatbush. Stallone's now filming Detox, a cop thriller, while Winkler, a television producer, is a consultant to a British stage version of his '70s TV hit Happy Days.
President Nixon told a huge TV audience April 29 that edited Watergate transcripts he was releasing would prove his innocence.
Chicago VII was the logical successor to Chicago VI and precursor to Chicago VIII—as well as the nation's top album this week. Numbers aside, the disc featured two of the brass band's better known songs: "Wishing You Were Here"—with backup vocals by Beach Boys Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson and Al Jar-dine—and "(I've Been) Searchin' So Long."
