Poppy Petal Montgomery's life began with a fairy tale—her name came from a book about flower fairies, as did those of sisters Rosie Thorn, 21; Daisy Yellow, 14; Lily Belle, 17; and Marigold Sun, 10. So it was natural for Montgomery to try a storybook approach to making it in Hollywood. With no acting experience when she moved there in 1994 from her native Sydney, she cold-called Julia Roberts's then-manager Bob McGowan to see if he'd help make her a star. "I sent him pictures all the time," she says. "I think he thought I was kind of funny."

And talented too—two months later, McGowan signed her. By 1995, Montgomery, now 23, was working steadily, with roles in ABC's 1996 series Relativity and this year's movie The Other Sister. She can now be seen in the Eddie Murphy comedy Life, as a bombshell paying a conjugal visit to an inmate. "She's a pip, that one," says Other Sister director Garry Marshall. "She's got a great energy and one of the great smiles."

Montgomery developed her sunny side in Sydney, where her mother is a market researcher and her dad a restaurateur (they are now divorced). She dropped out of school at age 14 ("I wasn't popular"), then held odd jobs before moving to the U.S. to try acting. Single, she lives in a Hollywood Hills apartment and in her free time hikes and takes long drives. As for Hollywood's so-called dark underbelly, Montgomery hasn't seen it. "I don't know any of the cool bars, I don't really drink," she says. "I'm still a big geek!"
