Bill Gates, 43, the Croesus who runs Microsoft, was at the side of wife Melinda, 34, on May 23 when she delivered their second child, Rory John (8 lbs. 12 ozs.), in Seattle. A spokesman for the family told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that Rory's 3-year-old big sister, Jennifer Katharine, is "very curious" about her new brother and that Mom plans to take at least the summer off before resuming her various philanthropic activities.

Uncoupled

Citing irreconcilable differences, Bronx-born actress Ellen Barkin, 45, filed for divorce from her husband of almost 11 years, Irish actor Gabriel Byrne, 48, on May 25 in Los Angeles. The couple, legally separated for almost six years, have two children, ages 9 and 6. Lately, Barkin has been keeping company with billionaire Revlon chairman Ron Perelman, 56, who himself divorced just last September....

Also citing irreconcilable differences, Lethal Weapon stalwart Danny Glover, 52, filed for divorce from wife Asake Bomani, an art gallery owner, on Feb. 4 in San Francisco. The couple married 18 years ago and have a daughter, Mandisa, 23.

Wed
On May 18, at the Beverly Hills Hotel, actor Brad Garrett, 39, the 6'8" sidekick on TV's Everybody Loves Raymond, married Jill Diven, 34. The couple have an 8-month-old son, Max, who attended the ceremony in a tiny tux.

Deaths

Author Alice Adams, 72, who wrote the best-selling novel Superior Women and was a regular contributor of short stories to The New Yorker, died in her sleep on May 27 in San Francisco....

Forward thinker Ed Peterson, 78, who came up with the idea for the Bac-A-Larm, the device that emits a series of high-pitched beeps when trucks and heavy machinery are moving in reverse, died of prostate cancer on May 26 in Boise, Idaho....

Chemist Waldo Semon, who earned a place in the National Inventors Hall of Fame for creating vinyl in the 1920s, died on May 26 in Hudson, Ohio, at age 100. He held 116 U.S. patents, including one for bubble gum.

Injured
Driving alone in the Australian outback on May 28, TIME art critic Robert Hughes, 60, collided head-on with another vehicle near the northwestern town of Broome and was seriously injured. After Hughes underwent 12 hours of surgery for multiple fractures, doctors were optimistic for a full recovery.

In Trouble
Shortly after 7 on the morning of May 12, cops in Los Angeles, busted actress Regina King (Jerry Maguire), 28, for felony DUI after she slammed her 1998 Honda Prelude into another vehicle. King, who played the daughter on TV's 227 from 1985 to '90, allegedly had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit but was not hurt. The other driver, though, suffered facial injuries.

Inquiry
A partial skeleton in the wreckage of a 1993 Ford minivan discovered May 29 at the bottom of a ravine in Malibu is believed to be that of Philip "Taylor" Kramer, 42, a former bass player in the rock group Iron Butterfly. The musician was last seen on Feb. 12, 1995, leaving in the minivan to pick up a business associate at the airport. Coroner's investigators have not yet identified the remains.
