Tlly Savalas told PEOPLE his popular TV detective, Kojak, "operates on instinct and decency, but if you give him any lip he'll throw you out a window." Kojak stopped production in 1990. Telly died in 1994 at age 72.

A Widow in Charge
Isabel Perón, 43, an ex-cabaret dancer, assumed control of Argentina July 1 upon the death of her husband, President Juan Domingo Peron, 78. Deposed in a 1976 military coup, she still lives in Argentina.

THE HOTTEST!
Gordon Lightfoot hit the top of the pop charts with the ballad "Sundown." Now 60 and living near a lake in rural Canada, Light-foot still tours. He released a four-CD retrospective (88 songs) this month.

Courting Trouble
John Ehrlichman, a former adviser to President Nixon, began trial June 28 on charges of conspiracy, perjury and obstruction of justice. "I abdicated my moral judgments," he said after conviction. Ehrlichman, who wrote novels after serving 18 months in prison, died last Feb. 14 at age 73.

Comer's Guide
Frank Sutton died of a heart attack June 28 at age 51 in his dressing room at a Louisiana theater. Sutton played the firm, funny drill instructor Sergeant Carter on TV's Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C, from 1964 to 1970.

Leap to Freedom
Mikhail Baryshnikov defected from the Soviet Union June 29 in Toronto. "If I let the opportunity of expanding my art in the West slip by," the Kirov Ballet star explained a few days later, "it would haunt me always." Baryshnikov, 51, currently performs with the White Oak Dance Project, a modern-dance troupe based in Florida.
