This summer, stylish stars are boldly going where '60s hipsters and '70s country-club matrons have gone before: to buy unapologetically, screamingly loud print dresses. ("Think Goldie Hawn on Laugh-In," says Hollywood stylist Jessica Paster, who recently outfitted Minnie Driver in a flower-power Gucci.) The eye-popping frocks—whether Pucci geometric or Lilly Pulitzer floral—make waves in fashion's sea of basic black. "I'm young, so it's okay to be tacky," declares actress China Chow, who prefers "$20 knockoffs" to designer togs. "The economy is good, it's a really optimistic time, and these exuberant prints reflect that," observes L.A. designer Trina Turk, whose fans include Gwyneth Paltrow and Meg Ryan.
But there's a fine line between sunshine-bright and blinding. "When you wear geometric prints head to toe, you can end up looking like a crossword puzzle," warns Paster. One rule: Keep the hair, makeup and shoes simple. "The only accessory you need," Paster notes, "is a great smile." And a little chutzpah. Says Turk: "These prints are not for wallflowers."
