Former Brat Packer Molly Ringwald, 31, married her longtime amour, French novelist Valéry Lameignère, 33, on July 28 in Bordeaux, France. It was the first marriage for the international twosome.

Births
She was only 9 when her parents moved into the White House. Now, almost 23 years later, Amy Carter, 31, is a mother herself. She and her husband of nearly three years, James Wentzel, 30, a computer specialist, welcomed their first child, Hugo James Wentzel (7 lbs. 13 oz.), on July 29 in Atlanta. Hugo's proud grandparents, former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, have nine other grandkids.

Expecting
Keanu Reeves, 34, has revealed that he is awaiting the birth of his first child. "He's very happy," says a spokeswoman for the actor. However, he won't disclose who the mother is. "She's not a public figure, and there's no need to draw more attention than necessary to her at this time," says the flak.

At Rest
On July 31, Eugene Shoemaker, a planetary geologist from Flagstaff, Ariz., who died in a car accident in 1997 at age 69, became the first person to have a lunar burial when the unmanned NASA spacecraft Lunar Prospector crashed—as programmed—onto the surface of the moon. Shoemaker's long-held dream of traveling to the moon came true, posthumously, after a colleague arranged for a lipstick-sized container of the scientist's ashes to be included on the spacecraft.

Uncoupled
Describing his marriage in court papers as "irretrievably broken," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, 56, filed for divorce from his second wife, Marianne, 48, a business consultant, on July 29 in Cobb County, Ga. The couple married in August 1981 and have no children together.

Fined

After agreeing to pay $850,000 to Paula Jones last year to settle her sexual harassment law-suit against him, President Clinton was cited for contempt of court on July 29 and ordered to pay Jones's legal team nearly $90,000 for lying under oath during the Sexgate foofaraw. In her decision on the matter, U.S. District Judge Susan Webber Wright wrote, "...the court takes no pleasure in imposing contempt sanctions against this nation's President and...grows weary of this matter." Amen.

Legal Matters
On July 30 a grand jury in suburban Maryland handed down a two-count indictment, including one for illegal wiretapping, against Linda Tripp, 49, who taped her former friend Monica Lewinsky describing her trysts with President Clinton. If convicted on both counts, Tripp faces up to 10 years in jail and $20,000 in fines.

Ailing
Jennifer Paterson, 71, one half of TV's heavyset culinary duo the Two Fat Ladies, has been undergoing treatment for lung cancer at a London hospital.

Deaths
Singer Anita Carter, who besides performing solo played stand-up bass and sang soprano with her mother, Maybelle, and sisters June and Helen in country music's Carter Family, died of rheumatoid arthritis on July 29 in Goodlettsville, Tenn. She was 66. Carter Family hits included "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and "Wild-wood Flower."
