Runaway Bride costars Richard Gere and Julia Roberts "seem to be much more happy and stable in their lives," compared to where the actors were nine years ago, says director Garry Marshall, who last directed them in the 1990 hit Pretty Woman. Both are now in steady relationships: Roberts with actor Benjamin Bratt and Gere with actress Carey Lowell, who is expecting the couple's first baby early next year. Says Marshall: "This time I had my grandchildren on the set. Julia and Richard seemed to be more interested in the children. [It was] like they were saying, 'Maybe it's not bad to have one of these chubby little things around.' " Marshall did give Gere, a Buddhist, some parenting advice: "He's into the world of spirits. So I kid him about it. I told him, 'Richard, you've got to talk different to a child. You can't say: "The universe says you will not cry." The kid ain't going to listen to you, Richard.' "

Even when he is in trendy East Hampton, N.Y., President Clinton looks for some down-home barbecue. So this year's Aug. 28 political fund-raiser at the home of lobbyist Liz Robbins will be catered solely by the Turtle Crossing restaurant, a local barbecue joint that helped cater a 1998 fund-raising gala at the Amagansett home of Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. Steven Spielberg and wife Kate Capshaw, among others, also accompanied the Clintons to Turtle Crossing last year. When I mentioned to owner Stanley Singer that this crowd really seems to dig his food, he humbly replied, "I hope they like it. They're not masochists. They pay their bills."

Comedian Jonathan Winters is working on his latest book, a collection of snappy comebacks entitled Know Your Enemy, Explains Winters: "When somebody comes up and says, 'You're a has-been,' I say, 'Yes, but I'm an international has-been, and you're just a local has-been.' " Admittedly, Winters can be prickly when insulted. "I was on a walk the other day when a guy said to me, 'I don't see you on television anymore.' I said, 'That's a coincidence, sir. I don't see you on television either.' "

Christie's is auctioning off 1,500 of Marilyn Monroe's personal belongings in October, but on Sept. 30, Sotheby's will be offering the chocolate-brown suit with a white-mink collar that Monroe wore when she wed Joe DiMaggio in 1954. Monroe personally gave the suit to Amy Greene-Andrews, the widow of photographer Milton Greene, Monroe's former partner in Marilyn Monroe Productions. Says Greene-Andrews: "She did not like shopping. So [a costume designer] went out and got it for her off the rack." Sotheby's says the starting price for the suit will be $15,000 to $20,000.

Fast Take: Every Friday night while filming Teaching Mrs. Tingle, a teen-comedy flick starring Katie Holmes (Dawson's Creek) and Barry Watson (7th Heaven) that opens Aug. 20, the cast would chill out at a karaoke bar in Los Angeles, where Holmes and Tingle director Kevin Williamson, both Grease! fanatics, would belt out "Summer Nights" for the crowd.
