It is wonderful to know that Marilyn Monroe's possessions will help out charities. They will also put the spotlight on her once again as one of the most beautiful women of the century.
Jim Rees, Toledo, Ohio
I am only 25 years old and have been a fan of Marilyn Monroe since eighth grade. I respect and admire her, and I'm excited about the Christie's auction. There is only one problem: I'm not rich! It bothers me that people who care nothing about her will be able to buy her things just because they have money.
Jennifer Kohlbrecher, Bloomington, Ill.
It is said that you can tell a lot about a person by her possessions. If you didn't know who Marilyn Monroe was and judged her by her possessions at the time of her death, you'd swear she was just an average person—which is probably what she wanted to be.
Kenneth Zimmerman Huntington Beach, Calif.
The pictures of Marilyn's beaded gowns reminded me of other gowns she ordered while honeymooning in Tokyo with Joe DiMaggio. Later, Kanamori-san, the couturiere I also used, told me about the day Marilyn arrived in her shop to be measured for the hand-beaded dresses. DiMaggio sat outside the dressing room but called loudly, "Please! Don't make them too tight!" Marilyn just giggled and whispered, "Don't pay any attention to him!"
Jane Trinkle, Vacaville, Calif.
It saddens me that people will make money from Marilyn Monroe's things. Joe DiMaggio buried everything he knew about her with him to protect her privacy. I believe it is terrible to cash in on someone who is no longer with us and agree with Tony Curtis that her things should be in a museum.
Shawn Earlene Baty, Salem, Ore.
As a baby boomer, I understand Marilyn Monroe's place in our pop-culture history—as a movie star and sex symbol as well as a friend of the Kennedys'. Despite these facts, was it necessary to waste 12 full pages on what appear to be trivial possessions? Enough is enough.
Joan Capp, Monroe, N.J.
Marilyn has been gone a very long time. Can't she just rest in peace?
Bonnie Peyton, Scottsdale, Ariz.
Your photos of Marilyn Monroe illustrate that combination of whimsy and wistfulness that made her unique. She was enchanting.
John Guzman, Miami
Tom and Nicole
I so enjoyed Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder and Far and Away that I was looking forward to seeing them together again. Not anymore! I was shocked and appalled by Eyes Wide Shut. It was a waste of my time and money, and I'm glad it's doing poorly at the box office.
Beth Blakey, Lincolnton, Ga.
We were duped. After all the hype, we thought we would see something marvelous on the screen in Stanley Kubrick's last 'film. Instead, we saw a boring soft-porn flick. Nicole Kidman bared her assets onstage in The Blue Room and again with her hubby in Eyes Wide Shut. My advice to her would be, "Honey, put your clothes back on and show us the acting."
Janet Kampouris, Sacramento
We all know that the value of a good movie is not in the ticket sales. The public goes to see either feel-good movies or violent and sexual films where they don't have to do any thinking. Eyes Wide Shut is an intelligent film not meant for the typical audience. Nicole and Tom should be very proud and will be center stage at Oscar time.
Berny Lucas, Burr Ridge, Ill.
The best news coming out of your article about Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman is that they do not plan to work together again soon.
Annie Dalton, Chattanooga
So Nicole Kidman went to the teacher when her daughter complained that another child pinched her. That makes her "fiercely protective"? No, guys, that makes her a mom.
Diane Watts, Blue Springs, Mo.
For years I've heard negative comments and snide remarks about Ted Kennedy. I hope your story will allow people to see the person and not just the political figure. You don't have to agree with his politics to respect the role he has played in the lives of the fatherless younger Kennedys. As someone whose own father died when I was 3, I can only imagine what his love and support have meant to them.
Janelle Tate-Beyerlein, Kansas City, Mo.
It is apparent that Ted's motto is "Ask not what your family can do for you but what you can do for your family."
Julie Uhrich, Akron
Please don't try to make a saint of Ted Kennedy. He is the spokesman for the Kennedy clan, but John Kennedy Jr. and his sister Caroline were the products of Jackie's upbringing and nothing to do with him.
Bette Andrews Noble, Victoria, Texas
I recently saw a bumper sticker that read Hang Up and Drive. Bravo to Brooklyn, Ohio, and Mayor Coyne for taking cell phones out of drivers' hands.
Donna Etcher, Fairfax, Va.
I was driven off the road by a preoccupied phone-in-hand driver. Why do we have to do everything at the same time? Drivers, if something is so important that it has to be handled right away, pull off the road to use your phone.
Mary Blessing, Taylor, Mich.
Mayor Coyne, would you consider moving to Sonoma County, Calif., and running for office?
Donna Nihill, Santa Rosa, Calif.
I have tried to digest the story about the canyoning tragedy in the Swiss Alps. I was in Interlaken, canyoning in that same gorge last summer. I think about all the great people I met, the beauty of the Alps, the guides that led us down that gorge and the unbelievable excitement we experienced. I am trying to understand how something so exhilarating for one group could have turned into something so tragic for another.
Sarah Vanderhoofven, Alpharetta, Ga.
I rely on PEOPLE to relate acts of heroism. Yes, Tami Levine endured a horrible experience, but what did she contribute? In her "panic," she was pulled out of the water to safety by someone, then she was pulled along the trail by others. She relied on her group for support, but when her friend needed her most she retreated into her personal grief. Tami survived because of those who acted instead of reacted. I am sorry for her ordeal, but I would rather hear about the true, unnamed heroes of this tragedy.
B. Davis, Fayetteville, N.C.
Lynette and Lillian, you go, girls! Reading about the health-care train brought tears to my eyes. In a world of selfishness and violence, it is refreshing to hear stories like this that remind us of the caring and humane side of people.
Amy Hurd, Odenton, Md.
I would like to send a generous donation to help Ms. Coetzee and Ms. Cingo. I will also encourage family, friends and coworkers to do the same.
Tonya Cobbs-Fox, Baltimore

I was impressed with your story until I came to the photograph of the staff of medical students relaxing after a hard day—with two packs of cigarettes on the table and a young woman lighting up. These are people teaching others about good health? Somebody needs to teach the staff a thing or two.
Susan Fineberg, Weston, Fla.
Vicki Lodge's letter, in which she mercilessly criticized Jerry Hall, was appalling. I don't know what her church is teaching her, but my church always taught us to refrain from vicious, judgmental attacks on others.
Susie Warley, Magnolia, Texas
