It has been more than a year since Murphy Brown signed off the airwaves, but Candice Bergen, 53, remains a style anchor. After taking a breather to spend time with daughter Chloe, 13, she's emerging again with a new beau (Manhattan real estate developer Marshall Rose), a new TV project (a talk show on the cable channel Oxygen, beginning in February) and enough innate elegance to dazzle our judges. "I've never seen her wrong," marvels designer Pamela Dennis. "A lot of movie stars need help, but she's got that inner style." "She has very fine taste," agrees A.B.S president Allen Schwartz. "She knows what she wants to look like." The 5'8" former Ford model, who lost her husband, director Louis Malle, to cancer in 1995, "is a classic American dresser," says Audrey Style author Pamela Keogh. "She has looked great for 25 to 30 years. A lot of younger actresses could take lessons from Candice."

1. "Glamorous but understated," says Star Wars' Trisha Biggar of the Versace Bergen wore to a Manhattan gala in May. Pamela Dennis approves of the accessories: "I love the Tod's bag. So young and hip."

2. The strapless satin Oscar de la Renta that Bergen chose for the Emmys in September is "perfectly simple and elegant," says Trisha Biggar. And designer Dennis is also impressed. "I like everything about it," she says. "I even like her white nail polish."

3. The View's Francine Taylor thinks Bergen looks "terrific" in the velvet Gucci that she wore to a Manhattan lunch in December. "I love the way she tied the scarf," adds Roshumba. "That's an art form."
