Deaths
Actress Ruth Roman, 76, a Hollywood screen queen from the late '40s through the '50s whose 30-odd films are relatively unknown today, died in her sleep on Sept. 9 in Laguna Beach, Calif. Two of her more familiar movies are 1949's Champion, in which she played opposite Kirk Douglas, and Strangers on a Train, the 1951 Hitchcock thriller.
Ripped Off
Thieves dressed as gas and electric repairmen conducted a heist at the hacienda that Dionne Warwick keeps in Rio de Janeiro. The 58-year-old singer was on tour in Myrtle Beach, S.C., at the time of the Sept. 2 incident, but the bad guys tied up her brother and housekeeper while they sniffed out $16,000 in cash and $50,000 worth of jewelry. No one was harmed, and police continue to search for suspects.
Uncoupled
After only 27 days of matrimony, the wife of Kirk Kerkorian, the 82-year-old billionaire who owns the lion's share of MGM studios and a good deal of DaimlerChrysler, filed for divorce on Sept. 10 in Los Angeles Superior Court. Lisa Bonder, 33, reportedly a former tennis pro, cited irreconcilable differences and asked for joint custody of their daughter Kira Rose, 1½. The couple married on Friday, Aug. 13.
Suing
The Beverly Hills cop who busted George Michael, 36, for committing a lewd act in a public rest room last year has filed a $10 million lawsuit against him. In a complaint filed on Sept. 13 in L.A., officer Marcelo Rodriguez says the singer has since slandered him in interviews and he has "suffered humiliation, mental anguish and emotional and physical distress." Michael could not be reached for comment.
On the Mend
Singer Graham Nash, 57, of the quartet Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, suffered two broken legs in a freak boating accident on Sept. 12 in Hawaii. According to Nash's manager, "Graham was on a powerboat when it hit a large wave, causing him to be thrown upward. As he was coming down, another wave hit the boat, and he landed very hard on the inside of the boat."
Retired
On Sept. 13 in Denver, the Broncos bade their ex-quarterback John Elway, 39, onto the field at Mile High Stadium during halftime and retired his jersey, No. 7. Elway, who led the team to two Super Bowl championships during his 16-year tenure, gave up football in May, saying he could no longer take the wear and tear of the game on his body.
