The son of actors who were always struggling, Richmond Arquette had this thing about Hollywood: He hated it. "I used to drive by sets," says Arquette, 36, "and yell things like, 'Hey, you filming a movie?' to get them to have to cut." One by one, his siblings—Rosanna, 40, Patricia, 31, Alexis, 30, and David, 28—found success in film, while he found himself teaching English in Thailand and running a bar in Australia. "I was really rebellious," he says. "I was an angry kid."

Today he's a happy man. Arquette has finally joined the family business, playing an ex-druggie in the new drama Sugar Town (with sis Rosanna) and a doctor in the Brad Pitt thriller Fight Club, due Oct. 15. "As an actor," says Town codirector Kurt Voss, "he's fearless."

His parents, Mardi (who died of breast cancer in '97) and Lewis, lived on a Virginia commune before moving to L.A. and gave him "a weird upbringing," says Richmond. "He had reason to resent his family," says Lewis, 63. "We lived a bohemian life. Everybody scrabbled for attention." But in 1990, after nine years of travels, Richmond says, "I felt I'd blown my life away." He took acting classes (bought by Patricia and Rosanna) and landed a role in '95's Seven. Single and living in L.A., he is glad to settle down. "It's taken a long time," he says, "but I wake up in the morning and I feel good."
