Really Big Shew
Ed Sullivan, the newspaper columnist who hosted America's favorite TV variety series (1948-1971), died of cancer Oct. 13 at age 73. His Sunday-night show featured acts ranging from the Beatles to Rudolf Nureyev to Italian mouse puppet Topo Gigio.

Broadway Baby
Bernadette Peters, 26, opened in the musical Mack & Mabel Oct. 12. She's still on Broadway today, in Annie Get Your Gun.

Reggie Jackson led the Oakland A's to their third-straight World Series over the Dodgers.
