Suing
In a complaint filed on Nov. 22 in Manhattan, a real estate broker accuses Goldie Hawn, 54, of bilking her out of a commission. Lynne Segal, who is seeking $115,215, says she showed the actress a penthouse apartment to lease in 1995 and was promised a percentage of the selling price if Hawn ever bought it. As it happens, she did—last year, for $3.8 million. Said her spokesman: "The lawsuit against Ms. Hawn is totally unfounded."

Deaths

Anthropologist Ashley Montagu, who helped popularize his field with accessible treatises like 1953's The Natural Superiority of Women, died on Nov. 26 in Princeton, N.J. He was 94....

Immigrant Daisy Tan, who inspired daughter Amy Tan's bestselling 1991 novel The Kitchen God's Wife, the harrowing tale of a Chinese-born matriarch, died on Nov. 22 in San Francisco. She was 83 and had been suffering from Alzheimer's.

Up in Smoke
A three-alarm blaze on Nov. 24 gutted the Manhattan "pan-Asian" eatery that was a pet project of designer Christopher Ciccone, a brother of Madonna's. It took more than 150 firefighters to put out the flames at the newly opened Oriont. Ciccone, 39, who decorated his big sis's New York City co-op and was the creative force at his hip restaurant, said he was "devastated."

Actor Mickey Rooney underwent emergency surgery to repair a perforated colon on Nov. 24 in Sydney. The 79-year-old trouper had to cancel the last two shows of his song-and-dance tour Down Under.

Resolved
Just a few days before a civil trial was to commence on Nov. 29, the widow of Olympic wrestler David Schultz reached a settlement in the wrongful-death lawsuit she had filed against multimillionaire John E. du Pont, an heir to the du Pont chemical fortune. In 1997, du Pont, 61, was convicted of fatally shooting Schultz, 36, the year before. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Nancy Schultz will receive something in the neighborhood of $35 million.

The New Jersey-based Craftsman Farms Foundation, curators of a home of American Arts and Crafts master Gustav Stickley, shelled out $142,500 for a pair of his oak corner china cabinets that Barbra Streisand, 57, put up for auction on Nov. 29 in New York City. The foundation says it had asked the superstar to donate or sell the circa 1909 pieces to its operation, but, says Streisand's flack, "They never contacted her about it."

Wed
On Nov. 19 in Las Vegas, daredevil Evel Knievel, 61, married Krystal Kennedy, 30, his girlfriend of several years. The marriage is his second and her first.

Hospitalized
Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen, 44, had successful hip-replacement surgery on Nov. 16 at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica.

Grieved
Megamodel Linda Evangelista, 34, revealed to Paris Match in late November that she had suffered a miscarriage three weeks earlier. She had been pregnant approximately six months. French father Fabien Barthez, 28, a champion soccer goalie, told the magazine, "It makes you realize that next to this, success, money and glory are worthless."
