A canoodling couple: Yes, that was George Clooney and Brooke Langton (Melrose Place) snuggling in a corner booth at Dan Tana's Italian restaurant in L.A. Langton was chilly during dinner, so Clooney, who has lately been sporting a salt-and-pepper beard, took off his jacket and placed it over her shoulders. The two nuzzled throughout dinner, laughing and kissing. At around 10 p.m., they left the restaurant and drove off in a black BMW.
The playwrights, novelists and editors who gathered for the annual Bad Sex in Fiction Award given out by London's Literary Review were surprised and amused by the appearance of a special guest presenter, James Hewitt, whose recent tell-all, Love and War, chastely doled out the details of his love affair with Princess Diana. The prize is meant to "draw attention to the crude, tasteless, often perfunctory use of...sexual description in the modern novel and to discourage it." More than 300 guests crammed into the ballroom of an elite gentlemen's club in London to hear ripe passages read aloud from the contending novels. Hewitt stood onstage throughout the presentation, beaming benignly, seemingly unaware of the irony of his presence.
The talk turned to diets when a noticeably trimmer Monica Lewinsky and Tom Arnold showed up as guest speakers at a class of public relations students at the University of Southern California. Arnold admitted to Lewinsky, who according to a source has lost more than 30 lbs. on the Jenny Craig diet, that he had actually gained weight on that plan. According to Arnold, he and his then-wife Roseanne "didn't follow the program exactly"—that is, they got so hungry they gorged on multiple meals and desserts. Today, Arnold told the students, he is a big fan of Xenical, a prescription diet pill that prevents some dietary fat from being absorbed.
Fast Takes: Ally McBeal's Portia de Rossi was so overwhelmed by costar Calista Flockhart's performance in bash: latterday plays, three very dark one-acts (Flockhart appears in two of them), that she sat in her seat with her head in her hands, visibly moved, and didn't leave until most of the audience had exited the Beverly Hills theater....
I hear that Leonard Goldberg has formally asked the three original Charlie's Angels, Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Farrah Fawcett, to make cameos in the Angels movie he is producing, starring Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. So far none has responded....
Jessie Gold, 15, follows in the acting footsteps of her older sister Tracey, making her debut in A Crime of Passion, a CBS movie (costarring Tracey) that is set to air Dec. 15.
