No stripping actually took place at the fifth annual VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards in New York City on Dec. 5, but the accessory of choice did seem to be lots of skin. The legendary assets of Jennifer Lopez, who was voted most fashionable female artist, took a back seat to her décolletage in a slit-down-to-there gold Gucci dress by designer of the year Tom Ford. And among cohost Heather Locklear's many costume changes was a green, navel-baring Versace. "She definitely beat me," remarked cohost Puff Daddy, whose ensembles included a full-length Fendi fur coat. "She had about 20 stylists."
Meanwhile, the usually underdressed rap star Lil' Kim, who presented the avant-garde designer award to Alexander McQueen, declared that she "wanted to do something different." So she covered up—sort of—with a veiled harem-girl number.
With fashion police present in full force, some celebs had spent the day fretting. "Putting my hair up or not: I agonized over that," confessed Minnie Driver. Friends' Matt Le Blanc, a self-professed "flannel shirts and work boots" kind of guy, slipped into a Prada suit because "if I you don't have nice fashionable clothes," he explained, "people make fun of you."
That wasn't a concern for ER star Julianna Margulies, who went streamlined with a black Narciso Rodriguez suit and straight hair. She was already thinking about after the afterparty. "In all honesty," she sighed, "it's always more comfortable to be in your pajamas."
