With millennium anxieties looming, who can blame a girl for clinging to a security blanket? Stars who can't bring themselves to do the Linus thing in public are grabbing today's socially acceptable version: the poncho. A big piece of fabric with a hole for your head, a poncho is "warm, soft and comforting," says Italian designer Angela Missoni, whose fans include Sharon Stone and Charlize Theron. "It gives you a cocoon feeling."
Unlike those macramé cover-ups beloved by the crunchy set, today's must-have versions are machine-knit wool in solids or stripes. But they still carry that Woodstock vibe. "I feel like a hippie chick in my poncho," beams The Jamie Foxx Show's Garcelle Beauvais, adding, "They're great for covering your shoulders while leaving your hands free."
Alas, ponchos don't always leave you free from a fashion faux pas. "They can look sloppy and unattractive when you wear them to a party at night," warns Hollywood fashion stylist Maryam Malakpour, who garbs Sheryl Crow. When darkness falls, avoid any blanket that's not on a bed.
