Get in line! Crayon-colored stripes are all the rage this season. On everything from ponchos and scarves to handbags and sweaters, "bright stripes make people happy," explains stylist David Whitacre, who has garbed Ricky Martin and Michelle Pfeiffer. "They're an answer to the winter doldrums."
They're also a throwback to headier times. "These stripes have a 1970s feeling," says Gabrielle Zuccaro, owner of the Hollywood boutique Bleu, where Cameron Diaz and Halle Berry shop, but "they're not the tacky stripes Marcia Brady wore. There's a sophistication to them. They're not ugly and obnoxious."
No matter how stylish these striations may be, though, steer clear of the head-to-toe look. "Stripes are dangerous when you overdo them," warns MTV veejay Ananda Lewis. And watch which way the lines go. "I will never do horizontal stripes," Lewis says with a shudder. "I have enough hips and enough thigh!"

Who needs Santa Claus at Christmas? Not relatives of divine diva Celine Dion. That was the singer herself, accompanied by an assistant in New York City's Chanel boutique at the height of the shopping season, snapping up all the jewels she could carry for her 13 siblings. Among her dazzling buys? A pink tourmaline cross set in 18-karat gold (cost: $4,950) and Chanel's signature white-gold star pendant ($4,250)....
It also paid to be on good terms with Rod Stewart. Just ask his ex Alana Stewart, who received a sinfully luxurious $900 cashmere bathrobe by TSE from her still friendly former spouse....
Under his tree, Michael Douglas found two treats for his feet: a pair of chic handmade leather boots and a pair of black nubuck loafers, both from Italy's Tod's—a gift from girlfriend Catherine Zeta-Jones, who purchased them for $690....
Not all the good cheer was holiday-driven. Madonna's was inspired by a good chair, namely an Indian-silk-upholstered child's seat that her stylist spotted in Italian fashion designer Patty Shelabarger's New York City showroom. Just days after the Material Mom went wild over the toddler-size throne, a cheery, pink silk version arrived on her doorstep. Shelabarger sent the $2,000 chair as a surprise gift, which now occupies prime space in daughter Lourdes's L.A. nursery....
One of Hollywood's annual fashion races has begun: top glamor queens are already jockeying to find the knock-'em-dead design to wear to the Jan. 23 Golden Globe Awards. Calista Flockhart is considering a special something by Carolina Herrera, while fellow nominees Julia Roberts, Sharon Stone and Annette Bening are sizing up Randolph Duke's glam gowns....
The honeymoon continues for Friends Courteney Cox Arquette Arquette and hubby David Arquette. The twosome, married for six months, recently trekked to Santa Monica jewelry shop Rafinity, where they selected an antique-style diamond-and-gold ring to complement the two wedding bands—one gold, one all diamonds—she already wears. "Courteney wanted to add some spice to her set," explains Rafinity co-owner Ann Whatu of the ornately carved $3,000 ring....
Courteney's cast mate Lisa Kudrow is flashing some new baubles too. Kudrow's husband, Michel Stern, surprised her recently with a gift of dainty dangling platinum-and-diamond earrings after she fell in love with the sumptuous $3,000 sparklers at a photo shoot.
DOUBLE VISION
Model-actress Elle Macpherson recently stepped out in a black strapless Valentino gown with trendy beaded belt—three months after Sex and the City's Kristin Davis sported the very same outfit at the Emmys. Who wore it better? New York City style-trend analyst Tom Julian gives the edge to Macpherson and her "sleeker, longer torso line," adding, "It's the beauty of being tall." L.A. stylist Cary Fetman disagrees. On Davis the dress was "better fitted," says Fetman, who also praised the actress's elegant hair and makeup: "Her overall look was absolutely stunning."

For the L.A. premiere of Anna and the King, Jodie Foster turned to fashion leading man Giorgio Armani. The hot-pink hue of the raw silk dress "puts me in a good mood," said Foster, who added silver sandals and a pashmina shawl.

How do you walk in 5-in. stilettos?
Roshumba, model
"Either you're born with the ability, which happens to be the case for me because I come from glamorous and beautiful women, or you learn it. If you want to be with the fabulous people, you have to learn it."
Vera Wang, fashion designer
"I've practiced Anything that makes your legs look longer is worth practicing."
Jill Hennessy, former Law & Order star
"I just shuffle around and hope I look like I'm walking."
Jennifer Tilly, actress
"Never drink when you're wearing 5-in. stilettos. For every inch of your heel, that should be one less glass of alcohol, because there's nothing glamorous about falling on your face."
presto change-o
They're baaack! To the joy of male moviegoers everywhere, Cameron Diaz's locks are once again their usual golden hue. The actress—who dyed her hair a muddy brown in the summer of '98 for her role in Being John Malkovich, then went even darker while shooting Invisible Circus last spring (above, left)—is now gearing up to star in the big-screen version of Charlie's Angels. So a few weeks ago (above, right) she reembraced her lighter side.
