Making Waves

Stars tired of playing it straight are adding crimping to their primping. Lately seen on trendsetters such as actresses Jennifer Love Hewitt, Renée Zellweger, Tyra Banks and Jennifer Aniston, the dramatically zigzag locks—attained with a special hot crimping iron on dry hair or extensions, plus a smidgen of pomade—are in the forefront of follicular fashion. "It's such an odd texture for hair because it's not natural," says Ally McBeal star Portia de Rossi. "But I like it because it's very young."

But not very new. The craze for tight waves started in the '70s and has had its fans ever since. Today, "it's not a style, it's not a look, it's not even a trend," says hairstylist Jonathan Antin, who has coiffed Christina Applegate and Jewel. "It's an accessory, like a pair of earrings."

But an accessory with more attitude than most. "It's different than just curling your hair," says model Claudia Schiffer. "It's got an edge to it." Sean James, who dresses Courtney Love's tresses at Hair at Fred Segal in Santa Monica, agrees: "It's a glam look." Best advice: Don't crimp your style unless you're heading for a night on the town.

behind the Seams

How badly did Cameron Diaz want the snazzy orange, pink and yellow python pumps she wore with her Gaultier ensemble at the Golden Globes? Enough to call Paris to have the exotic $530 Chanel shoes shipped days before the show. Though python is not an endangered species, an antiquated California law forbids its sale in the state—so Diaz shipped back the hard-to-find loaners the next day....

If Drew Barrymore has a special glow when she appears in the big-screen version of Charlie's Angels later this year, it's because she's getting the goddess treatment: She has not one but two knot-busting masseuses giving her rub-downs between takes....

In a high-fashion twist on Supermarket Sweep, Janet Jackson recently gave a gal pal a major shopping splurge at trendy L.A. boutique Bleu for her birthday. The chum, with Jackson in tow, went on a knock-yourself-out spree and wound up bagging a sexy Anna Sui crocheted top and several cozy mohair sweaters by Rebecca Danenberg....

Barbra Streisand's favorite designer Donna Karan wasn't taking any chances with her Fall 2000 clothing line, which bows in New York City this week. She called on David Raney, a consultant in the ancient Chinese art of feng shui, which places objects harmoniously, to "empower her creativity," he says. To do so, he hauled sacred rocks, live plants and even a fountain into her work space....

Seen around L.A.: Minnie Driver, in a crisp, man's button-down shirt and jeans, browsing for a miniskirt.... A sunglass-wearing Cher, snapping up a $1,600 mink-trimmed cardigan by Italian designer Blumarine for 50 percent off.... Lisa Marie Presley flinging open her long faux-fur-trimmed coat to show off snakeskin pants to pals at a party.

Ali's Shawl Thing

The bohemian coed look she popularized in the 1970 weepie Love Story isn't Ali MacGraw's only contribution to fashion. From her home base in Tesuque, N.Mex., MacGraw, 60, has now come out with a line of ultra-luxe embroidered evening bags and pashmina shawls inspired by her travels to India. "They're treasures," she says of her Ali MacGraw Milagro creations, which cost from $650 to $1,300. "And I love the travel, collecting, research and hands-on aspect of it."

Despite the hefty price tags, the pieces are big hits at the exclusive shops where they've been sold since their launch last fall. "The initial interest is definitely because of Ali MacGraw," says Katherine Almquist, buyer for Razooks in Greenwich, Conn. "But they would sell out without her name. They're timeless." L.A. stylist Cary Fetman thinks they're perfect for his clients Claudia Schiffer and Courtney Thorne-Smith. "There's only one [shawl] left at Neiman's," he says, "and I'm getting it!"

All About My Mother star Penélope Cruz spread her fashion wings at the Golden Globes in an angelic white Swiss-organza Ralph Lauren gown and matching shawl. "I fell in love with it," the Spanish actress says of the outfit. Who didn't feel the same about her?

DOUBLE DOUBLE VISION
Is it just coincidence, or is Charlize Theron a copycat? At the MTV Video Music Awards last fall, the cameras loved Law & Order star Angie Harmon's form-fitting Marc Bouwer dress. Apparently, so did Theron, who four months later sported the same outfit—down to the shoes—at the People's Choice Awards. At the Emmys, Frasier's Jane Leeves glammed it up in a sea-foam Randolph Duke gown; Theron glommed on to it at the Golden Globes four months later. (Note the matching longer locks too.) "Charlize didn't mind that [the dress] had been worn to another event by another actress," Duke says. Now, that's something new and different.

star talk

What's the most embarrassing thing hanging in your closet?

Tumbleweeds' Janet McTeer "Hot pants from the first time around."

Lauren Holly "Long underwear that have snowflakes on them that I've had since I was like 12."

Ally McBeal's Gina Philips "From, like, the sixth grade, a motorcycle jacket with studs all over it."

Jack & Jill's Amanda Peet "These brown suede Freelance boots that are just very '80s-kind of tight around the ankle. By 2010 they'll be totally back in style!"

Sharon Lawrence "From the '80s, this Pat Benatar black leather dress, really tight, with a V cut out of the front and shoulder pads this big and diamond studs all over it. That is a butt-ugly dress."
