Songbird Doris Coley Kenner Jackson, who sang with the girl group the Shirelles (and also sang the lead on their 1959 hit "Dedicated to the One I Love"), died on Feb. 4 of breast cancer in Sacramento. She was 58....

Rock and roller Dave Peverett, lead singer of the 1970s group Foghat ("Slow Ride"), died of complications from kidney cancer on Feb. 7 in Orlando. He was 56....

Gorilla Willie B., whose isolation for 27 years in Zoo Atlanta drew public outrage in the '80s, died there on Feb. 2 of heart failure. He was 41.

Mattel CEO Jill Barad, 48, who said, "Hello, dolly," to the down-at-the-heels Barbie brand in 1983 and helped raise sales to almost $2 billion yearly, resigned on Feb. 3 in El Segundo, Calif. Known as the Babe in Toyland, Barad told shareholders that her $3.5 billion acquisition of the Learning Company, a software outfit, had been financially devastating for Mattel.

Singer Jerry Lee Lewis, 64, accidentally cut his hand on Feb. 1 while playing with a knife at his Mississippi home and suffered an allergic reaction to a local anesthetic. He is expected to recover fully.

Money Matters
New York State claims that Martha Stewart has been lax in her housekeeping—at least concerning taxes. The state's Division of Tax Appeals recently rejected arguments contesting a $221,677 tab imposed because the domestic goddess had lived in East Hampton, N.Y., for more than half of 1991 and '92 but claimed residency in Connecticut. A spokeswoman says that Stewart, 58, "believes she was unfairly taxed" and plans another appeal.
