Leave it to Dad to make weighty pronouncements about global warming, nuclear disarmament and peace in South Asia. As for Chelsea? She just wowed 'em. Five years after she first visited India with her mother, a poised and confident First Daughter made a triumphant return, this time on her father's arm. Despite White House protestations that she wasn't filling in for Hillary, who was back in New York State campaigning for the U.S. Senate, all eyes were on the self-possessed 20-year-old Stanford University junior. Schoolchildren waved "Welcome Chelsea" placards along her motorcade route, and one full-page ad in the local press read, "Welcome Back Chelsea. And thanks for bringing your father."

Despite the scrutiny, she proved an adept fledgling ambassador, sprinkling rose petals at Gandhi's memorial in New Delhi and showing ballet-trained perfect posture while greeting ministers in the Indian Parliament. She even teased press photographers, saying, "What, do you want me to fall in the water?" when they tried to edge her too close to a Taj Mahal reflecting pool. "We are lucky that she has come here," said one Jodhpur official. Adds presidential scholar Stephen Hess: "[The trip] was every father's dream."
