YOU CAN TAKE THE GIRL OUT OF THE COUNTRY, but you can't take the country out of the girl. No matter that she's a five-Grammy country-pop crossover phenomenon who lives in a 100-room chateau in Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland, with her South African songwriter-producer husband, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, 51. Or that she has a reported $3 million contract with Revlon cosmetics. When Shania Twain, 34, is out of the spotlight and her pores are parched, she opens a tin of Bag Balm. "When my skin is really dry, I'll rub it over my face and on my hair and leave it there ail day," Twain, who grew up in rural Ontario, told Britain's Daily Telegraph
last November. That's right, buckaroos, the singer whose "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" became a pop anthem last year smears herself with an odoriferous mixture of petroleum jelly, lanolin and antiseptic used to soothe cows' irritated udders. Says Twain's stylist Jamie Kimmelman: "Other people talk about how they can't live without their $200 moisturizer, but that's not her attitude. She likes to use what makes her feel good." As for looking good, Twain pal, singer Michael Bolton, says, "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see she's got beauty in all areas." One area in which the 5'5" performer looks famously good, despite claims that she doesn't work out: her often bared midriff. "Women either copy her look or they feel threatened by her because she's so free with her body," fellow country star Wynonna Judd told PEOPLE in 1999. "We all wish we had a belly button like hers, but most of us have had babies." So does Judd think Shania should cover up, just a bit? Not at all. "She is merely fulfilling her destiny," Judd believes. "Shania, you go, girl!"
