I'm feeling a little sassy tonight," announced Ally McBeal's Lucy Liu, who looked it in a sequined Versace minidress. "I'm ready to party." So were the other stars who turned out at the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City, Calif., for the taping of the 2000 MTV Movie Awards on June 3.

If the Oscars are all about getting dolled up, then the MTV awards, with their popcorn trophies, offbeat categories (best kiss: Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair) and unpredictable winners (best movie: The Matrix), are a chance for Hollywood's hippest to let their hair down. Take it from Denise Richards, whose stylist spent two hours "teasing the crapola" out of her sorority-girl mane to better suit her skintight leather ensemble by Spain's Loewe. The result? "It's rock 'n' roll wild," she said. "It's MTV." Who cared if Music Television has little to do with movies? Certainly not the evening's host Sarah Jessica Parker, who, having changed outfits no fewer than 15 times during the show, fathomed, more than most, the profundity of the event. "I'm not a comedian, I'm not a rock star," she said with a laugh. "The only thing I can contribute is great taste and fabulous clothes."
