Politically Incorrect's Bill Maher arrived late to the HBO prefight party because he drove and had trouble navigating the L.A. streets. Why didn't he take a limousine like other celebs? Maher, it seems, has issues with traveling by limo. "You think it should always be there but it's never there," the late-night TV host whined. "You have to retrieve it, but you're always angry because you think you should be having convenience, but you have less. You have to call them on the cell phone, but the cell phone doesn't work. So it becomes like an anchor you're carrying around behind you."
New dad Richard Gere recently told Garry Marshall, a father of three who directed Gere in Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride, that he gets misty every time he looks at his 5-month-old son Homer. "It never ends," Marshall replied. Apparently tears came to Marshall's eyes when he saw his son Scott's name in the credits during a rough-cut screening of Spin Cycle, which stars Howie Mandel and marks the younger Marshall's feature-film directorial debut.
In The Adventures of Joe Dirt, David Spade plays a janitor who was dumped by his parents at the Grand Canyon when he was 8 years old and remains stuck in the 1970s. Spade, usually clean-shaven on his NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me, sports sideburns, a mustache and a goatee in the comedy, which he's filming in L.A. He has had such a positive response from women that he's considering keeping the hairy additions, explaining, "Every girl I know says, 'You've got to keep this dirtball look.' "
Billy Joel cleaned out his oceanside Amagansett, N.Y., estate prior to turning it over to Jerry Seinfeld, who bought it for the un-bargain-basement price of $35 million. That's probably where Joel found the numerous pairs of black jeans—all new—as well as some shoes, both new and used, which he donated to the Bargain Box, a shop on the town's Main Street benefiting the Ladies' Village Improvement Society. The jeans, all imported and size 34-30, sold fast for $18 a pair.
Fast takes: At a private party at the Staples Center after the Los Angeles Lakers' championship victory over the Indiana Pacers on June 19, coach Phil Jackson huddled in a booth with girlfriend Jeanie Buss, daughter of team owner Jerry Buss....
Meanwhile, Lakers star Kobe Bryant, 21, who announced his engagement to 18-year-old high school senior Vanessa Laine in May and gave her a seven-carat diamond ring estimated to be worth more than $100,000, will marry before the next season begins in the fall.
