Striding fashionably through the dog days of August calls for footwear with a little more flair than the basic flip-flop. That's why celebs such as Lucy Liu, Melissa Joan Hart and Garcelle Beauvais are tying one on, Roman-style, with lace-up sandals. Stars love the leather-bound shoes because "they make your calves stand out in a very attractive way," says Moesha's Sheryl Lee Ralph, who had a pair custom-made in London. Plus, she adds, "they're Gladiatorish." The Jamie Foxx Show's Beauvais, who wore black Charles David lace-ups at a premiere recently, agrees: "I will follow any trend Russell Crowe wants me to follow!" Even if it hurts, apparently. "The laces can cut off the circulation," she admits. But tying tight is the only way to keep in step, explains Charles David designer Nathalie Marciano, who says double knotting is also a good idea. "You don't want the laces to slide down," she says, adding, "Sorry, you must suffer a little."

Behind the Seams

After Jennifer Lopez executed some sizzling salsa moves during her recent 31st-birthday bash, the supernova clearly needed to cool off. So Lopez, in a strappy fuchsia dress and rhinestone-studded sandals, did what any truly fun-loving party girl would do: plunged into her swimming pool without a care about soaking her snazzy ensemble....

Color is Laura Bush's word du jour. The First Lady hopeful, a standout at the GOP convention in a pistachio silk suit by Dallas designer Michael Faircloth, plans to ditch the earth tones she normally favors for cheery hues on the campaign trail. It's a populist approach: "When she wears colors that are too dark or mannish, she gets letters," says Faircloth....

If actress Téa Leoni is seeing stars these days, there's a good reason. Mrs. David Duchovny has gone gaga for 1940s zodiac-themed glass buttons recycled into hip necklaces by Hollywood costume designer Betsy Heimann. Leoni sports one in the upcoming flick The Family Man, for which Heimann is costumer. Leoni, a Pisces, was so taken with the $165 charms that she sprang for nearly a dozen....

Are Drew Barrymore and Winona Ryder in tune telepathically? It would appear so, considering the two missed each other by minutes at an L.A. vintage store recently. Barrymore stocked up on lots of ruffle-adorned '70s garb. Just after she left, in strolled Ryder, who picked up—you guessed it—several 1970s ruffled garments herself....

The race to find the perfect frock for the Sept. 10 Emmy Awards is on. I hear that Will & Grace's Debra Messing has selected a bold burgundy Vera Wang gown. Meanwhile, nominee Holly Hunter is said to be pondering rock-and-roll-style hip-huggers and a saucy little top.

Rockin' Regalia
Pray that your mom didn't throw out your old stash of Iron Maiden T-shirts. The concert tee is back—ideally a close-fitting vintage 70s or '80s version, customized with rhine-stones, as seen recently on model Kimberly Stewart (Rod's daughter), The Sopranos' Drea de Matteo and Spin City's Heather Locklear. "We're not opposed to armpit stains," says L.A. designer Nina Garduno, who affixed 3,000 crystal studs to the vintage Bob Seger T-shirt Lara Flynn Boyle wore at this year's Golden Globe awards. "The more authentic, the better."

What Was She Thinking?
Combat boots paired with a short floaty dress: Courtney Love circa 1990? No, it's newly red-haired actress Rachael Leigh Cook (She's All That), stuck in a grunge time warp at last week's Teen Choice Awards. Leesa Evans, Cook's costumer for the upcoming movie Josie and the Pussycats, a remake of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, says Cook is actually trying for a '70s look: "She's getting into the role and wearing things that reflect the style of the movie."

Dressed to a Tee
Move over, Rodney Dangerfield. The baggy, blinding greens wear of years past is giving way to—dare we say it?—golf chic. With younger, hipper players—both men and women, pro and amateur—hitting the links, "golf clothes are getting snazzier because golf is getting trendier," says stylist Samantha Degen, who dresses Tiger Woods in sophisticated colors and streamlined silhouettes. "Designers are taking classic pieces and adding a twist." Actress Angie Everhart favors smartly tailored white Versace pants, while Jane Seymour likes Escada's trim-fitting golf line, calling it "a little edgier than the classic golf attire." Now if only it could help edge the ball closer to the cup....

Star Talk

What was your worst hair mistake?

Actor Treat Williams
"I dyed my hair white and shaved half of it to accommodate wigs [for a role]. The next day they canceled the movie."

Actress Lea Thompson
"I had really, really short hair about three years ago. I hated It I just felt really ugly."

Actress Linda Gray
"I got a permanent. I didn't know what to do with all that crinkling hair."

'N Sync's Lance Bass
"Last summer I dyed my hair black. It wasn't me."
