bustier. Elizabeth Hurley wore more body glitter than the entire U.S. Olympic gymnastics team. Whatever happened to quiet elegance? At Oct. 20's VHl/Vogue Fashion Awards in New York City, celebs took the night's rock and roll vibe as license to turn the fashion volume up, up, up. Explained actress Milla Jovovich, sporting a slip dress by designer of the year Stella McCartney and a feather in her hair: "You gotta be a little weird."

And more than a little fond of the spotlight. The stars obliged with sparkle aplenty, from presenter Angie Harmon's silver sequined Michael Kors gown to performer Macy Gray's shimmering makeup. Ubermodel Gisele Bundchen, who cohosted the ceremony with Cuba Gooding Jr. (her beau Leo DiCaprio was a no-show), even sported a gold-tipped manicure to go with her ever-changing array of six glittering designer outfits. And was skin ever in, from Jennifer Lopez's short shorts to Jennifer Love Hewitt's shirtlessness beneath a Richard Tyler leather blazer ("A little skin is good!"). Even boxer Oscar De La Hoya—whose proximity
prompted squeals of excitement from fan Hewitt—got into the spirit. "I love dressing up," admitted the Gucci-clad pugilist. "I love messing with my hair."

Fittingly, rock royalty ruled the night: McCartney, 29, picked up her award from dad Paul, whose unannounced appearance prompted cheers. After boogying at the post-awards bash at Manhattan eatery Cipriani, where the younger McCartney kicked up her heels with best bud Liv Tyler, plenty of fashionable
folk went home happy. Lanky blonde Carmen Kass nabbed the model of the year award, while Gray, Enrique Iglesias, Chloe Sevigny and Jude Law bagged most-stylish-celeb honors. But rock star or frock star— which is cooler? Asked if she would rather be a musician or a model, Hurley replied, "Rock star, of course. Mick Jagger. Who wouldn't?"
