A Houston jury ruled on March 7 that Anna Nicole Smith, 33, is not entitled to half the estate of her late husband, J. Howard Marshall II, who died in 1995 at age 90, and that his sole heir is his son E. Pierce Marshall, 62. Smith was awarded $475 million from the estate in January in a federal bankruptcy trial in L.A....

Grady Carter, 70, a former cigarette smoker in Jacksonville, Fla., received $1.1 million from Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. on March 8. The lung-cancer victim was the first person to collect from the tobacco industry over a cigarette-related illness.

Prolific suspense novelist Robert Ludlum, whose bestsellers include The Bourne Identity and The Matarese Circle, died from cardiac arrest on March 12 in Naples, Fla. He was 73.

Singer Whitney Houston, 37, was cleared of a Hawaiian marijuana-possession charge on March 5 after she satisfied a substance-abuse assessment. She pleaded no contest last November to the petty misdemeanor charge after her handbag, allegedly containing 15.2 grams of marijuana, was seized at the Keahole-Kona airport in January 2000.

Sequel

On March 9 a judge in Fort Lauderdale sentenced Lionel Tate, 14, to life in prison without parole for the first-degree murder of playmate Tiffany Eunick, 6. She died nearly two years ago while Tate was imitating pro wrestlers, his defense attorney said. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has agreed to consider a clemency hearing....

Novelist Margaret Truman Daniel, 77, daughter of former President Harry S. Truman, filed a $4 million wrongful death suit on March 6 in Manhattan against a taxi company and its driver in the Sept. 4, 2000, death of her son William Wallace Daniel, 41.
