Suing
In Atlanta on March 29, John and Patsy Ramsey filed an $80 million libel and defamation suit against former Boulder, Colo., police detective Steve Thomas, alleging that he falsely implicated them in the still-unsolved murder of their daughter JonBenét, 6, in a book he cowrote about the case. In a statement, Thomas denied the charges.

Deaths
Pianist John Lewis, a founder of the Modern Jazz Quartet, died on March 29 in New York City of prostate cancer. He was 80.

Former " Hollywood Madam" Heidi Fleiss, 35, who spent three years in a federal prison for conspiracy, tax evasion and money laundering, was arrested in L.A. for violating her parole by using methamphetamines and failing to report for mandatory drug testing....

Ex-New York Yankees slugger Darryl Strawberry, 39, was arrested April 2 in Tampa, four days after he disappeared from his court-ordered drug treatment facility. Strawberry, who is being treated for colon cancer, was charged with violating probation from a 1999 drug case.

On April 2, attorney John Reiner, 53, was convicted in Ventura, Calif., of trying to extort $310,000 from Erin Brockovich-Ellis, 40, and her attorney-boss Ed Masry, 68, by threatening to tell the media that the two had had an affair, which they deny. Reiner faces up to four years in prison when he is sentenced on May 2.

Sequel
In a case that gripped San Francisco, two lawyers—Marjorie Knoller, 45, and Robert Noel, 59—were charged on March 27 with involuntary manslaughter for letting their Presa Canario dog attack and kill their neighbor Diane Whipple, 33, in their apartment building earlier this year. Knoller was also charged with second-degree murder. Both face lengthy prison terms if convicted.
