Ailing
Talk show host Rosie O'Donnell, 39, was hospitalized on April 4 in New York City with a post-op infection of her left hand. O'Donnell had surgery last fall to reconstruct a tendon she sliced cutting a price tag off a fishing pole for her son Parker.

On the Mend
Country star Naomi Judd, 55, broke her right ankle April 2 after she stepped into a hole on her farm in Franklin, Tenn. Judd is walking with a cane and is expected to heal in about six weeks.

Christopher Meloni, 40, who costars on NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and HBO's Oz, and his wife, Sherman Williams-Meloni, 40, a production designer, had their first child, a daughter, Sophia Eva Pietra, on March 23 in L.A....

Singer-songwriter James Taylor, 53, and his wife, Caroline Smedvig Taylor, 47, a publicist, welcomed twin sons on April 5. The boys, unnamed at press time, are the couple's biological children but were carried by an unidentified surrogate, a friend of the couple's, who underwent in-vitro fertilization last year. Taylor has two grown children from his marriage to singer Carly Simon....

Actress Rebecca De Mornay, 41, and sports-caster Patrick O'Neal, 33, had their second daughter, Veronica, on March 31 in L.A. Big sister Sophia is 3....

San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, 67, and Carolyn Carpeneti, 38, a political fundraiser, had a daughter, Sydney Minetta, on April 8. Brown, separated (but not divorced) from his wife, Blanche, for about 20 years, has three grown children and two grandchildren.

Behind Bars
On April 3 a Miami jury found Dubravko Rajcevic, 46, a Croatian-born naval architect, guilty of stalking Swiss tennis star Martina Hingis, 20. Rajcevic faces up to four years in jail when he is sentenced April 12.

Deaths

Hall of Famer Willie Stargell, the home-run hitter who helped the Pittsburgh Pirates win the World Series in 1971 and 1979, died April 9 in Wilmington, N.C., of a stroke. He was 61....

Theodore Gottlieb, the deadpan comedian known as Brother Theodore in his somber one-man shows, died of complications from pneumonia on April 5 in New York City at age 94....

David Graf, 50, the overzealous officer in the 1984 comedy Police Academy, died on April 7 of cardiac arrest in Phoenix. He also played a colonel on NBC's The West Wing.

Law and Order
Former "Hollywood Madam" Heidi Fleiss, 35, was sentenced to six months of home detention on April 10 in L.A. for violating her parole by using methampheta-mines and failing to report for mandatory drug testing.

Sequel
A British court ruled on April 9 that Alan and Judith Kilshaw could not have custody of 9-month-old twins Belinda and Kimberley, whom they adopted over the Internet last year (PEOPLE, March 19, 2001). The girls are to be returned to Missouri, where they were born, but, for the moment, will remain in foster care pending a possible appeal.
