Off to the Races!
"Oh no," insists Bo Derek. "I have never gone to the Derby without a hat. I have to wear a hat." A galaxy of stars—among them Courteney Cox Arquette Arquette, Anne Heche and Sean Young—attending the 127th running of the Kentucky Derby agreed, observing tradition by donning a bevy of beautiful bonnets. "I felt fantastic when I had it on, like a real southern belle," says Heche of the white Shuichi Kameoka creation she bought at Barneys New York in L.A. Other headliners included Roseanne's feathered Philip Treacy topper and Loni Anderson's wide-brimmed stunner. "She looked beautiful in it," says socialite Tricia Barnstable Brown, host of a celebrity-strewn pre-Deirby fete. "The size was just magnificent."
Hats have graced Derby-goers ever since the race began in 1875, taking a cue from England's Royal Ascot races. Now "people are raking even more pains in finding beautiful hats," I says Barnstable Brown. The effort, says Heche, was worth it. "It was like being in a different time for a day," she says. "It was divine."
with Eileen Finan in London, Alison Singh Gee in Los Angeles and Barbara Sandler in Chicago.
behind the seams
Tom Green lipstick?! The emerald idea isn't as far-fetched as you might think. Blame the gross-out comic's lady love Drew Barrymore, who is helping her best friend (and her makeup artist), Jillian Dempsey, develop hot new products for her makeup line, Delux Beauty. Dempsey, who is married to actor Patrick Dempsey, hit up Barrymore to brainstorm ideas for names of lip shades. Drew's inspiration: Why not dub a hue or two after their men? The "Tom" will be a high sparkle berry shade and "the Patty" a velvety caramel....
Bonding and shopping were the order of the day for Michelle Pfeiffer and Gina Gershon, who recently hit trendy L.A. retail shrine Fred Segal together. The giddy girlfriends got so into their togetherness they popped for similar Hawaiian print T-shirts, which they both changed into before strolling out of the store....
I hear everyone's favorite fashion plate, Madonna, has anointed French designer Jean Paul Gaultier to create some of the onstage duds for her upcoming Drowned World Tour 2001, which kicks off June 9 in Barcelona. The pair last worked together on the singer's highly memorable 1990 Blond Ambition tour—cone-shaped corset anyone?—and are looking to make magic again....
George Hamilton has another preoccupation besides roasting in the sun: shopping. He's had plenty of time to indulge since he started work on a new untitled Woody Allen movie in Harlem. "I love working with Woody," says the Tanned One. "You film half the day and then you're off. Great for shopping." The cool cat's latest splurges? Oh-so-hip threads from Sean "P. Diddy" Combs's Sean John collection—and Levi's jeans. "I love the classic cut, the originals," notes Hamilton. "Older men have to be careful. You have to cover your love handles. I don't Michelle have love handles, by the way." Okay, George!
DOUBLE VISION
Sheer luck enabled actress Brittany Murphy to snag the same sexy Roberto Cavalli dress from a photo shoot that Jennifer Lopez wore at an awards show weeks earlier. Cavalli tries to avoid repeats but concedes, "[Murphy] looked beautiful." On another front, Josie and the Pussycats star Tara Reid and actress Natasha Richardson zeroed in on the same Rebecca Davies hand-beaded halter. "She saw it in the window," says the boutique clerk who sold Richardson hers. "She didn't need much help because she knew what she wanted."
What was she thinking?
Oh baby! Everything wacky in a mother-to-be's life gets blamed on raging hormones, so why not Tisha Campbell-Martin's outfit? The My Wife and Kids actress went belly-up—and belly out—last week in A Pea in the Pod bra top and fishtail skirt, revealing a tummy covered with Swarovski crystals and a henna tattoo. "Kudos for celebrating her pregnancy," says L.A. stylist George Blodwell. "She's showing it off and I don't blame her." Like we said: Blame the hormones.
Strip Tease
Forget studly stubble. Stars like Creed's Mark Tremonti, 'N Sync's J.C. Chasez and Vertical Horizon's Matt Scannell are sporting this season's height of hirsuteness: strip beards—sort of a mohawk for the chin. "No, it's not a razor mistake," says L.A. hairstylist Jennifer Jahanigloo. "Men can only change their looks so much, so they start doing things with their facial hair." A.J. Popoff of the band Lit agrees. "It's a way to reshape your face, of staying fresh," he says. "First goatees were popular, now this is the trend. It makes me feel manly."

It's time to hit the beach—and find a look that works both on the sand and in the surf. Describe your favorite swimsuit.
MTV's Ananda Lewis
"I used to be a swimmer in college, so I wear swimsuits I can actually swim in, and that cuts out bikinis."
The Immortal's Lorenzo Lamas
"If I'm swimming laps, then a Speedo. If I'm lounging at the pool, then it's usually Armani trunks."
Spy Kids's Alan Cumming
"I like Gucci swimming trunks. I've got a lovely pair that are orange with lots of flowers on them."
Saturday Night Live's Ana Gasteyer
"I finally graduated to a bikini. I decided so what if I have a belly that sticks out. I even bought a belly ring to boot."
Bridget Jones's Diary's Colin Firth
"I do not wear tiny swimming trunks. I have a sense of humor about myself, but it doesn't extend that far."
