Country singer and songwriter Clint Black, 39, and actress Lisa Hartman Black (Knots Landing), 44, welcomed their first child, 7-lb. 14-oz. daughter Lily Pearl, on May 8 in Los Angeles....

Acting Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift, 36, gave birth to twin girls Lauren Alma and Sarah Jane Hunt on May 15 in Boston. Swift, the first woman in U.S. history to give birth while serving as chief executive of a state, had been working from a hospital bed for a week. She and her stay-at-home husband, Charles Hunt, 47, have a daughter, Elizabeth, 2.

Expecting

Kevin (Hercules) Sorbo, 42, will soon be on diaper duty. He and his wife of three years, actress Sam (Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda), 36, expect their first child, a boy, in August....

Also expecting their first child that month are pro wrestler and The Mummy Returns costar Dwayne Johnson, better known as The Rock, 29, and his wife, financial planner Dany Garcia, 32....

Australian-born media mogul Rupert Murdoch, 70, and his wife Wendi Deng, 34, are also awaiting their first child, due later this year. Murdoch has four adult children from two previous marriages.

Deaths

Songwriter James Myers, 81, who cowrote the 1955 rock and roll anthem "Rock Around the Clock," succumbed to leukemia on May 10 in Fort Myers, Fla. Myers estimated that he made $10 million in royalties....

British author Douglas Adams, whose 1979 cult classic The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxysold more than 14 million copies, died on May 11 of a heart attack at age 49 in Santa Barbara, Calif....

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jason Miller (That Championship Season), 62, suffered a fatal heart attack May 13 in Scranton, Pa. As an actor, Miller was nominated for an Oscar in 1973 for his portrayal of the young priest in The Exorcist. He was the father of actor Jason Patric.

Engaged
Actor Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), 39, plans to wed actress Gina Torres (Any Day Now), 30, but no date has been set. This will be his second marriage and her first.

Legal Matters

On May 9 in New York City, Woody Allen, 65, sued his friend and former producer Jean Doumanian, claiming she cheated him out of profits from eight of his films, including Small Time Crooks and Mighty Aphrodite. Allen is seeking an undisclosed amount. Doumanian says the allegations are false....

Singer-songwriters Randy Newman, Tom Waits and sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson of the rock group Heart filed a $40.5 million copyright infringement suit on May 7 in L.A. against the online music site MP3.com. The artists claim that 270 of their songs are illegally available on the site.

Update
On May 14, L.A. prosecutors decided not to file new drug charges against Robert Downey Jr., 36, who was arrested on April 24 in Culver City. Instead the case is being handled as a parole violation. The actor is now in a drug-rehab facility.

Sequel
On May 10 a jury in the British Virgin Islands convicted William Labrador, 37, a PR exec from New York, of murder in the death last year of Lois McMillen, 34, a Connecticut artist whose body was found on Tortola island (PEOPLE, Jan. 15, 2001). He was sentenced to life in prison.
