Warm enough for you? Not for celebs like Debra Messing, Jill Hennessy and Star Jones, who are turning up the heat by slipping into red-hot hues. The scorching shade "looks great on all skin tones," says designer Christina Perrin. "It's striking on brunettes, stunning on blondes, gorgeous on redheads." And "it makes me feel powerful," says red fan Kathie Lee Gifford. There are good vibrations in the crimson tide as well. "In China red is money and good luck," explains L.A. stylist Jeanne Yang. "It's everything positive." That rings true for The Bold and the Beautiful's Adrienne Frantz. "I had a dream that I wore a red dress to the Daytime Emmys and I won," says the soapster, who took the hint, donned a fiery satin gown by Perrin and seized the best younger actress trophy.

So go with red, but heed the stop signs. Though the hue "can coordinate with almost every color," says Yang, avoid pairing it with green. "You would feel like a Christmas tree," says Frantz. "Nothing says 'Jingle Bells' more."

behind the seams

Dish from the American Fashion Awards in New York City: As Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Calvin Klein strolled down the red carpet, a fur-protesting member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals nailed him with a tofu pie. But the flying dessert was meant for fur-friendly Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld, standing nearby. Oops! The next day sheepish PETA folks sent a note stating, "You already have our respect, please accept our apologies" to the anti-fur Klein and included a peace offering of a dozen white roses, which I hear the unforgiving designer promptly tossed in the trash....

It was love at first sight for Heather Graham and the daringly different Christian Dior slip dress she sported when presenting the Womenswear Designer of the Year award to Tom Ford. Graham had eyed the $4,625 striking floral number and its silk-tulle overlay at a fashion-mag photo shoot weeks earlier. "When I knew I was coming here, I asked if I could wear it," she says. But the frock nearly didn't make it onto Graham's torso; it was about to be shipped out for another photo shoot when her reps rang Dior with the Heather-has-to-have-it request....

Making her Drowned World tour a family affair, Madonna realized she had to stock up on enough luggage to accommodate her brood. So she had her stylist contact Louis Vuitton, which gifted Mrs. Ritchie with an $8,650 monogrammed trunk, a $9,000 checkerboard-patterned trunk and three pieces of the French company's $2,880 Alzer hard-leather suitcases. But that bounty wasn't enough. Soon afterwards the Material Mom dispatched a handler to Vuitton's Beverly Center store in L.A. to use her VIP discount on a $1,380 garment bag....

Academy Award-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden just splurged on the perfect accessory: a gray $50,000 Jaguar S-Type sedan complete with navigation system and voice-activated controls. Harden first eyed the jazzy car at a Jaguar event in March and vowed to buy it if she snagged an Oscar. Drive safely, girl!

DOUBLE VISION
Kate Beckinsale gladly sported Givenchy's peasant blouse, skirt and leather belt for Pearl Harbor's London premiere knowing Kate Hudson had worn the ensemble weeks earlier. "We thought it would be okay," says Beckinsale's stylist Jessica Paster. "We were going for a '40s vibe, and Kate Hudson was going for a more playful vibe."

Everything old is new again! What big style fad from the past would you love to see revived?

Samuel L. Jackson
"Argyle sweaters, because I like colors and I like patterns. I think they're very cool."

Thora Birch
"Shoulder pads. They give the female form something special."

Sex and the City's Kristin Davis
"Katharine Hepburn pants. I like the tailored classic pants."

Halle Berry
"I would bring back hats. I love the '50s, when women used to wear the hats, the gloves. They were feminine and completely put together."

John Travolta
"Bring back miniskirts and only miniskirts!"

What was she thinking?
Olé? No way. Raquel Welch paired a hot-pink Escada matador jacket with her own silky haltered pantsuit at the Imagen awards for Latino cultural awareness because "she wanted to pay homage to the Latin community," says an Escada spokeswoman, noting Welch borrowed the top. Too bad her own peekaboo accents steal the show. "She loves fun clothes," explains Welch's stylist Petra Pfaffli, who didn't work with the actress on this ensemble. "It has to have some sass. It can't be boring." In that case, mission accomplished.

On the Fast Track
Cross Michael Jackson with Easy Rider and you'll get Hollywood's latest obsession, Dolce & Gabbana's slim-waisted motorcycle jacket. Madonna, Usher, Justin Timber-lake and Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham all turned up in recent weeks in the tricolor-leather looker, which sells for around $1,300. "It's comfortable but glamorous," says a D&G rep. Not to mention ultra-cool. "I liked it immediately," says Usher. "When I wear it I feel like Speed Racer."

Gem Dandy
She's the first "face" of jeweler Harry Winston, but model-actress Carolyn Murphy (Liberty Heights) isn't awash in diamonds in the firm's new campaign (left). Execs want women to see Murphy, style à la Grace Kelly and wearing delicate baubles, as "approachable," says rep Carol Brodie. That's fine with Murphy, except for the Kelly part. "She was kind of an ice queen," she says. "I think of myself as more warm and quirky."
