Pop Stars Try to Show They Do, for Charity, as Reege Does the Quizzing on Millionaire
When technical glitches caused an hour's delay in taping a special pop-star edition of ABC's quiz hit Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (airing July 22, 24, 26, 27), the musicians seized a lifeline: They put on a concert for the Manhattan studio audience. Performing without instruments, the Go-Go's sang "We Got the Beat," former New Kid on the Block Joey McIntyre belted out Barry Manilow's "Can't Smile Without You," and Tyrese (see story, page 83) earned an ovation with the national anthem.
Then on to the game, where the likes of Huey Lewis (minus the News) and TLC's Lisa Lopes awaited the chance to take the hot seat opposite host Regis Philbin and win cash for their favorite charities. It was also an opportunity, as Nick Lachey of 98° put it, to "look like a big jackass on TV." But overall, said Philbin, "these people are pretty confident," despite the fact that no one went overboard brushing up on trivia. "I read the newspaper today for the first time in three years," said McIntyre. And Pat Monahan, lead singer of Train, basically just brushed up himself. "I took a shower," he said. "I hadn't done that in a while."
