Labor Pains
With Labor Day approaching on Sept. 3, we asked celebs to recall the one job they'd most like to forget.
John Leguizamo: "In the early '80s, I was working as a cook-delivery boy at Kentucky Fried Chicken in New York City. But my main duty was fighting off these two rats that kept sneaking into the kitchen. I even named them Ben and Willard. I left the job before they did."
Jennifer Aniston: "I waitressed at the Jackson Hole diner in New York City. The customers didn't like me because I would try to memorize the orders instead of writing the entire thing down. Suddenly, hot dogs became hotcakes."
Kevin Pollak: "I was a door-to-door vacuum salesman. I only got into two houses. I had dumped the little bit of dirt on the person's carpet, and I didn't even get to the part where I cleaned it up. I just said, 'This is absurd,' and left."
Cameron Diaz: "I worked at TCBY, the yogurt shop. The first two weeks I literally lived on the chocolate and vanilla swirl, then the mere sight of it left me queasy."
'N Sync's Chris Kirkpatrick: "About eight years ago, I took pictures at Sea World. I got fired because I wasn't obnoxious enough. I'd tell people, look, I've got to take 20 pictures before I can go back in the air conditioning. So would you let me just take your picture? I don't care if you buy them or not.' "
Robin Williams: "I was a mime who worked in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It really required combat pay. Kids would try to kick you."
Rene Russo: "I did modeling for [maternity] catalogs. For some reason they thought pregnant women looked sexier on the beach. So we would go onto the sand, and I would have to wear these big, hot pads under my clothes all day. It was just so sweaty."
Chris Tucker: "I worked for my dad's cleaning service, and we cleaned [at] Burger King and McDonald's. Working for your dad is the hardest thing ever. He won't fire you; he'll just give you a whipping."
Margaret Cho: "I worked at the F.A.O. Schwarz in San Francisco as a Raggedy Ann doll. I had to walk around in that outfit, and kids would kick me and say, 'Raggedy Ann isn't Chinese!' "
Tom Arnold: "Pulling fat out of the inside of the hogs' ribs at the meat-packing plant. It makes your fingernails fall off."
Michelle Pfeiffer: "I was a supermarket checkout girl. I had just graduated from high school, and I thought the rest of my life would be spent telling little old ladies, 'I'm sorry, ma'am, that coupon expired 10 years ago.' "
