First the known facts: Jodie Foster's new son is named Kit, and he arrived around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, weighing 6 lbs. 3 oz. and measuring 18½ in. long. Labor was brief. Mother and son went home the next day and are both doing fine. As for Dad—who is to say? Foster, 38, wasn't forthcoming about the whole paternity thing when Charles, her first son, was born three years ago. She said, "I'm not going to discuss the father, the method of conception or anything of that nature." It isn't even clear if Kit's father and Charles's are the same man—although Pat Kingsley, Foster's publicist, says, "She did tell me that Kit looks exactly like Charlie."

Foster had taken it easy the last three months of her pregnancy after finishing the thriller The Panic Room, in which she plays a woman terrorized by burglars, a role she took over in early February after Nicole Kidman bowed out with a knee injury. "Jodie let us know she was pregnant when she came onto the film," says associate producer John S. Dorsey. "Her pregnancy didn't affect the shoot at all."

The break gave her time for the things expectant moms do—like shopping. "She brings her little guy Charlie in here all the time," says the manager of Tom's Toys in Beverly Hills. "He plays and she buys lots of toys"—including, perhaps, a whole caboodle for Kit.
