Although the lawyer for Cheryl Tiegs's husband, yoga teacher Rod Stryker, claims the couple had discussed divorce, Tiegs now tells us she was shocked when Stryker's lawyer faxed her divorce papers (PEOPLE, Oct. 29, 2001). The pair had been in couples therapy, but Stryker "just decided he doesn't want to work on it," says Tiegs. Though Stryker, 44, has filed for sole custody of their 15-month-old twins Jaden and Theo, who were born to a surrogate mother, Tiegs, 54, dismisses his chances. "I'm sure they'll stay with me," she says.

Jennifer Aniston canceled at the 11th hour as a presenter at an L.A. fund-raiser for the Lili Claire Foundation on Sat., Oct. 20. Aniston's rep says the actress was feeling skittish about going out in public, and her security people told her simply, "Don't go." Her Friends costar and the evening's host Matthew Perry, however, managed to make it to the event, which honors casting director Leslie Lift Resnick's daughter, who died in infancy.

Apparently a 34th-birthday party for Julia Roberts that same night posed no security problems for Aniston, who turned up with hubby Brad Pitt. Hot Hollywood producer Jerry Weintraub threw his Ocean's Eleven star a first-class bash at his eight-acre beachfront Malibu estate. Among the 80 guests were Roberts's new boyfriend, cameraman Danny Moder, and her Ocean's costars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle and Pitt. Champagne flowed as Wolfgang Puck cooked dinner, which included duck, lamb and his famous pizzas. Later everyone sang "Happy Birthday" as Puck brought out a chocolate cake. The guest of honor, whose actual birth date is Oct. 28, stayed until 1:30 in the morning.

With Katie Couric temporarily absent from the Today show following the death of her sister, Virginia state senator Emily Couric (see story on page 66), Maria Shriver got the call to cohost with Matt Lauer. Subbing for Katie undermined Shriver's plans to promote her new book, What's Wrong with Timmy?, which teaches children about the disabled. One spot that had to be rescheduled: Shriver's appearance on Today.

The actors in HBO's Band of Brothers have formed a bond not unlike the one shared by the soldiers they play in the World War II drama. Every Sunday night about 15 of them, along with their wives or girlfriends, get together at one of their homes in L.A. for dinner and a viewing of the mini-series. This past Sunday Rene Moreno, who plays Ramirez, whipped up a Mexican meal. Now they're trying to figure out what they'll watch after Brothers ends on Nov. 4. It looks like The Practice will win out, since one of them, Ron Livingston, is on the ABC series.
