Arrested
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, 65, the ex-wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela, 83, was arrested in Pretoria, South Africa, on Oct. 18 and charged with 85 counts of fraud and theft. The controversial antiapartheid activist allegedly obtained bank loans totaling more than $100,000 for nonexistent employees of the African National Congress Women's League, of which she is president. Mandela denies the charges.

I Do!
Former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, 36, wed his longtime girlfriend, former model Perla Ferrar, 28, in Maui on Oct. 15. The rocker, whose real name is Saul Hudson, was divorced from model Renee Suran in 1997.

Births
Good Morning America senior national correspondent Claire Shipman, 39, and her husband, Jay Carney, 36, TIME magazine's White House correspondent, welcomed their first child, son Hugo James, on Oct. 15 in Washington, D.C.

Deaths

Composer Jay Livingston, 86, whose collaboration with Ray Evans earned three Oscars, including one for 1956's "Que Sera, Sera," died of pneumonia in L.A. on Oct. 17....

Rev. Howard Finster, 84, a Baptist preacher and one of the most prominent folk artists of the 20th century, died of congestive heart failure on Oct. 22 in Rome, Ga. A prolific artist who called his creations "sermons in paint," Finster also designed album covers for rock groups including the Talking Heads and R.E.M.

Expecting
Pop singer Sarah McLachlan, 33, and her husband of four years, Ash Sood, 33, the drummer for her band, are expecting their first child in March.

Suing
In L.A., Ron Brewington, 54, a former freelance newscaster at Los Angeles radio station KJLH, sued the station and its owner, singer Stevie Wonder, 51, for wrongful termination on Oct. 1. A lawyer for Brewington, who was affiliated with the urban contemporary station for 17 years, said his client is suing because "he was dismissed without a warning or due process." Wonder's lawyer says the case is without merit.

Sentenced

In New York City on Oct. 18, four men convicted in the August 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa were sentenced to life without parole. The attacks in Tanzania and Kenya, which killed 224 people, were blamed on Osama bin Laden, 44, who was indicted in the case, and his al-Qaeda terrorist organization. Khalfan Khamis Mohammed, 28, Mohamed Sadeek Odeh, 36, Mohamed Rashed Daoud Al-'Owhali, 24, and Wadih El Hage, 41, were each ordered to pay $33 million in restitution....

On Oct. 17 Grammy-winning rapper Jay-Z, 31, pleaded guilty to assault for the 1999 stabbing of a record producer during a fight at a nightclub in New York City. The performer, whose real name is Shawn Carter, is expected to receive three years' probation.

Update
World-renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti, 66, was acquitted on charges of tax fraud on Oct. 19 in Modena, Italy. The opera star was accused of failing to declare $19 million in income from 1989 to 1995 (PEOPLE, Oct. 8, 2001). In July 2000 he began paying $11.5 million he owed the Italian government in back taxes.
