Former football great O.J. Simpson, 54, was acquitted on charges of auto burglary and battery in Miami on Oct. 24. Simpson, who was cleared of criminal charges in the 1994 slayings of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, was accused of grabbing a motorist's glasses and scratching his face during a Dec. 4 road-rage incident.

Actor Eugene Jackson, 84, who starred in the Our Gang silent films of the 1920s, died of heart failure at his home in Compton, Calif., on Oct. 26. Dubbed "Pineapple" because of his startling Afro, Jackson had appeared more recently in TV's Sanford and Son.

Princess Margaret, 71, Queen Elizabeth's younger sister, was admitted to a London hospital on Oct. 29 for undisclosed tests. The princess previously had two strokes, which left her partially paralyzed on her left side, but a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said, "There is no cause for alarm."
