Former Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson, 37, who currently runs her own lingerie company, and her boyfriend of six years, financier Arpad "Arki" Busson, 39, became engaged on Jan. 9 in the Bahamas. The couple have a son, Flynn, who turns 4 on Valentine's Day. Macpherson was previously married to Elle magazine publication director Gilles Bensimon.

Doctor Dolittle 2 star Eddie Murphy, 40, and his wife of eight years, former model Nicole, 34, welcomed their fifth child, daughter Bella Zahra, on Jan. 29 in Los Angeles. She joins Bria, 12, Myles, 10, Shayne, 7, and Zola Ivy, 2.

Deaths

Harold Russell, 88, who lost both his hands in World War II and went on to win two Oscars for 1946's The Best Years of Our Lives, died of a heart attack in a Needham, Mass., nursing home on Jan. 29. Russell earned a special Oscar for "bringing hope and courage to fellow veterans" as well as one for Best Supporting Actor. He later dedicated his life to championing the disabled and rarely acted again....

Hildegard Knef, 76, the sultry German actress known as "the thinking man's Marlene Dietrich" and who appeared in 1952's The Snows of Kilimanjaro, died of a lung infection in Berlin on Feb. 1....

Renowned Austrian photographer Inge Morath, 78, who had been married to playwright Arthur Miller since 1962, died of lymphoma in New York City on Jan. 30.

Jailed
After turning himself in to a Fort Lauderdale judge, actor Brad Renfro (The Client), 19, was sent to jail for violating his two-year probation for attempting to steal a yacht in August 2000. The violation occurred on Jan. 14, when Renfro was charged with public intoxication and driving without a license in Knoxville, Tenn. Whether or not the actor stays behind bars will be determined at a Feb. 7 status hearing. A lawyer for Renfro said, "It's all part of growing up."

Update

The L.A. coroner's office revealed on Feb. 3 that TV and film director Ted Demme (Blow), 38, had a small amount of cocaine in his system when he died last month, which may have contributed to the heart attack that killed him (PEOPLE, Jan. 28,2002)....

In a Manhattan court on Feb. 5, Lorraine Hale, the former head of Hale House, 71, and her husband, Jesse DeVore, 68, pleaded not guilty to charges that they stole in excess of $700,000 from Hale House Foundation, part of the Harlem charity founded by Hale's mother that cares for abandoned infants of drug addicts (PEOPLE, June 4, 2001). A lawyer for Hale, who was ousted from her post in May, said, "We will acknowledge that mistakes were made."

Arrested
Four-time Olympic gold medalist Olga Korbut, 46, was arrested for shoplifting $19 worth of groceries in Gwinnett County, Ga., on Jan. 31. Now a gymnastics coach in Dunwoody, Ga., Korbut says that she left her wallet in her car and intended to return to pay for the items. A hearing has not yet been set.
