Two Writers Chronicle the Dashing, Romantic Escapades of [Your Name Here]
You. The moon. A deserted beach. Brad Pitt, his muscles aching with desire as he lowers his lips to yours. You sink together into the warm sand. Brad has waited so long for this moment....
In your dreams, right? Well, yes, unless you're Jennifer Aniston. But for $50, J.S. "Fletch" Fletcher and Kathy Newbern can make it come true—at least on paper. Writing as Fletcher Newbern, the couple will insert your name (and that of anyone else you choose, well-known or not) in one of their 10 customized romance-adventure novels, which come in "mild" and "wild" versions.
"In our books," says Fletcher, 51, "you hang out with the rich and famous. But the important thing is having that person you love."
Travel writers who married in 1994, Fletcher and Newbern, 46, write and design the books in their Raleigh, N.C., home. They got the idea in 1992 when someone said, "Wouldn't it be great to read about yourself in one of those romance novels?" Their first book, Another Day in Paradise, was ready by Valentine's Day and sold 500 copies, mainly via word of mouth. Now the novels—all set in exotic locales—sell about 6,000 copies a year.
To limn the telling details, customers fill out a questionnaire that asks about partner's eye color and pet names, among other data. The romantic read is ready in two weeks.
Polly and George Hagopian of Boca Raton, Fla. (she's 59, he's 67), received Cruise Alaska (a "mild" romp of derring-do and light smooching) from their daughter for Christmas. It was a revelation. Says Polly: "My life is so much more interesting than I thought."
