Engaged

Irish-American dancer Michael Flatley, 44, the creator and star of the mega stage shows River-dance and Lord of the Dance, asked his girlfriend of three years, former model Lisa Murphy, 29, to marry him on July 12 in Monaco. She said yes. The couple plan to wed later this year....

TV Guide Channel host Debbie Matenopoulos, 27, and JCOR Records CEO Jay Faires, 39, became engaged on July 2. The couple have not yet set a wedding date.

Births
Actress Debi Mazar (The Insider), 37, and husband Gabriele Corcos, a jazz musician, welcomed their first child, Evelyn Maria, on July 12 in L.A.

Recovering
The Price is Right host Bob Barker, 78, had surgery to eliminate discomfort from an enlarged prostate on July 10 in Washington, D.C. The 14-time Emmy winner is expected to make a full recovery.

Law & Order
In Alexandria, Va., on July 15, a lawyer for American Taliban John Walker Lindh, 21, announced that his client agreed to plead guilty to aiding the Taliban and carrying explosives. In exchange, the U.S. government agreed not to prosecute him on nine other charges, including conspiracy to murder U.S. nationals. "Walker Lindh could have faced life in prison but now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Behind Bars
On July 15 in San Francisco, Marjorie Knoller, 47, the lawyer whose dogs mauled lacrosse coach Diane Whipple, 33, to death in the hallway of their apartment building last year (PEOPLE, April 8, 2002), was sentenced to four years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.

Trouble
On July 16 in Philadelphia, NBA superstar Allen Iverson, 27, was arraigned on more than a dozen charges, including criminal trespass and assault and firearms violations, stemming from a July 3 incident in which he allegedly barged into a cousin's home with a gun. The 76ers guard was allegedly searching for his wife, Tawanna, whom he had thrown out of their mansion after an argument two days earlier.

British-born Islamic militant Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, 28, was sentenced to death by hanging on July 15 in Hyderabad, Pakistan, for the murder earlier this year of kidnapped Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl (PEOPLE, March 11, 2002). Three accomplices also received life sentences for conspiracy, kidnapping, murder and tampering with evidence....

Former DeKalb County, Ga., Sheriff Sidney Dorsey, 62, was convicted of plotting the murder of his successor, Derwin Brown, 46, who was gunned down in December 2000 after winning the election (PEOPLE, March 12, 2001). Dorsey could face life in prison.

Deaths
Photographer Yousuf Karsh, 93, who earned international recognition for a 1941 portrait of Winston Churchill as well as photos of Ernest Hemingway and Albert Einstein, died in Boston of complications from surgery on July 13.
