Waxed Figure
Some cosmetic enhancements, as Cindy Crawford learned in grade school, should be left to the experts. "I used to have a space between my front teeth, and I put a rubber band around my teeth at night," says Crawford, 36. "I was like a self-prescribing orthodontist. But it would give me a headache. I finally had to get a retainer." Even now the model endures some pain for gain. "If I'm going to get results, I'll suffer. I mean, we all get waxed. I thought after having a baby I wouldn't mind," says Crawford, who has son Presley, 3, and daughter Kaia, 10 months, with restaurateur hubby Rande Gerber. "You know what? It still hurts!"
Not Quite Quittin' Time
After 2000's Where the Money Is, Paul Newman said he was looking for his cinematic swan song. Is the Mob drama Road to Perdition the screen gem with which he will end his career? "I keep trying to retire from everything and discover that I've retired from nothing," says Newman, 77. "I was going to get out of the racing business, and now I'm back in. I was going to let someone else handle the spaghetti sauce, and now I'm back. I think about hustling other people to buy sauce. I just finished Our Town, the first play I've done in 35 years, which is like sticking a rifle in your mouth. So I don't seem to be able to retire." The screen icon pauses before adding hopefully, "Maybe if you get me a different swan?"
Planning Ahead
Will Smith missed hearing his name called for his first Best Actor nomination at the Oscars last March, but he isn't complaining. Rushing off to check on his ailing 1-year-old daughter Willow earned him a lifetime award of heightened parental power. "If something is really wrong, what kind of jerk am I sitting at the Oscars?" says Smith, 33, who attended the ceremony with wife Jada Pinkett Smith. "Then I said, 'But if nothing is wrong and we have to leave the Oscars, then for the rest of her life we got her!' We can tell her, 'No, you can't go on this prom date. We don't like this guy.' And when she goes, 'But Dad,' that's when we say, 'Hey, Oscar night—we left the damn awards for you!' "
Powers to the People
"It's amazing to make a series of movies out of what started as an in-joke," says Mike Myers, 39, the star and creator of the Austin Powers flicks. What inspired his wacky characters? "I am a culture vulture. I was a feral child raised by TV" says Myers, who reprises his roles in Austin Powers in Goldmember, due July 26. "I still love to watch TV. I never mute the commercials. And I go on the Internet a lot. I looked up the CIA home page and the British M16. Those sites are funnier than you'd think—like the buttons that say, 'Click here for employment opportunities.' "
A Sense of Styler
In the drama Me Without You Trudie Styler plays a neurotic mom whose risqué frocks would embarrass most kids. Her own fashion sense can exasperate her brood. "When my daughter Mickey [now 18] was much younger, I went to her school in a leather-studded jacket," says Styler. 48, who has four kids, ages 6 to 18, with hubby Sting. "It was pretty out there. I had an appointment to see the headmistress, and my daughter saw me in the corridor. She took one look at me and hissed, 'Get that off!' And being petrified of my young daughter, I did."
