In San Antonio on Aug. 13, professional wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin, 37, was charged with assaulting his wife, Debra Williams, 42, in June. Austin, who is due in court on Sept. 18, was released on $5,000 bond. He could not be reached for comment.

In Court
On Aug. 14 in Van Nuys, Calif., automobile sales promoter Mark Hatten, 34, pleaded not guilty to stalking his ex-girlfriend Anna Nicole Smith, 34, who ended their two-year relationship in June 2000. Smith claims that in March, Hatten called her repeatedly and attacked her neighbor. Hatten also pleaded not guilty to charges of battery, assault with a deadly weapon and making terrorist threats. "I am unjustly incarcerated," says Hatten. "I went from being a boy-toy to a prison inmate."

Sued
Scott O'Grady, 37, the U.S. pilot who was shot down over Bosnia in 1995 and escaped from Serbian military units, sued Twentieth Century Fox and the Discovery Channel on Aug. 19 in Texarkana, Texas, for allegedly making unauthorized productions about his ordeal. O'Grady claims that Fox's Behind Enemy Lines (starring Gene Hackman) and the Discovery Channel's Behind Enemy Lines: The Scott O'Grady Story invaded his privacy and falsely represented him.

Deaths

Painter Larry Rivers, 78, who helped usher in the Pop Art movement with his ironic and often irreverent paintings, died of liver cancer in Southampton, N.Y., on Aug. 14. Rivers was also a sculptor and an accomplished jazz saxophonist.

...Journalist Neal Travis, 62, best known for his outrageous celebrity reporting as a gossip columnist for the New York Post, died of cancer on Aug. 14 in New York City. The New Zealand native was also a prolific novelist....

Dave Williams, 30, the lead singer of the heavy metal group Drowning Pool, was found dead on the band's tour bus in Manassas, Va., on Aug. 14. The cause of death has not been disclosed. The band was touring with Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest.

Trouble
On Aug. 16 in Seattle, Leon Hendrix, 54, brother of the late guitarist Jimi Hendrix, filed a lawsuit seeking to gain part of his brother's estate, valued at around $150 million. The estate had been controlled by their father, Al Hendrix, who died at age 82 in April and left nearly everything to his adopted daughter Janie. Leon, a struggling musician, claims that Al was "the target of undue influence" by Janie and that therefore his will is invalid. Janie denies all charges.

Legal Matters
Stephen Gilchrist Glover, 28, who stars on MTV's Jackass as Steve-0, surrendered to Houma, La., police on Aug. 14 to face felony, charges of obscenity and battery. In July Glover allegedly exposed himself and stapled his scrotum to his thigh while onstage at a local bar, then participated in a stunt in which a teenager was injured after he was slammed into the ground. A lawyer for Glover, who was released on $35,000 bail, had no comment.
